The UK is not known for sunny, beach locations, but if there was ever any hope of finding an area that comes close, Cornwall would be the region to search in. Located in the very south-west corner of the country, this is a rural and incredibly peaceful area, home to retirees, surfers and most importantly, people seeking out a good Cornish Pasty.
The idea of 'British Food' is a difficult one to nail down, and could now just as easily be considered Indian or Chinese food as much as original local foods. But Cornish Pasties are one of the few examples of a local, traditional food that has stood the test of time and is truly delicious. If you have not tried one of these meaty stews wrapped in flaky pastry, then Cornwall is the best place to visit to try them! You can even visit the Cornish Pastry Heritage Centre in St Austells.
There are some nice beaches in Dorset and other parts of the southern coast, but on a nice day these get unbearably packed with people. The beaches of Cornwall (with better annual weather) are usually less crowded, partly due to their remote and sometimes difficult to reach locations.
Cornwall is an old and traditional place, and you won't find villages and little sea-side towns like these anywhere else (apart from maybe some of the Scottish coast, but good luck with the weather). There are very few departures from the expected architecture and look, with beautiful white-washed cottages and slate roofs. My brother lived in the relatively sleepy Truro for a while and it's such a different place compared to the cities of the Midlands or more northern cities in the UK.
We are both fairly keen surfers, and he took me to a few tiny little beaches that we had to trek down to, and although I'm not going to include these locations in this article, the real joy of a quiet little place like Cornwall is the ability to discover your own spots. There are few places in the UK better for a 'camping on the beach' road trip than Cornwall.
