In 2015 Plzen was the European Capital of Culture making it a great place to visit for any lover of culture, beer and nature. Also called Pilsen, it is a city in western Bohemia in the Czech Republic. About 90 kilometres (56 miles) west of Prague, it is the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic.
The cathedral of St. Bartholomew is a Gothic church located on the Main Square in Plzeň, Czech Republic. It was probably established together with the city around the year 1295.
The Old Synagogue, located in the courtyard of the houses in Smetana´s Parks and the Great Synagogue. The Great Synagogue was built in Moorish-Romanesque style in 1893. It is the second biggest synagogue in Europe and the fourth biggest in the world. It is evidence of the rich Jewish community in Pilsen, which was unfortunately almost all anihilated during the Nazi occupation in years 1939 – 1945. The historical building was renovated at the end of the 20th century and, as well as for religious purposes, it also serves as a concert and exhibition hall due to its excellent acoustics and a unique atmosphere. The newly reconstructed Great Synagogue is located in a walking distance from the Old Synagogue. It is hidden in the courtyard nearby Smetana´s Parks, so it can be easily missed but it is really worth visiting.
Pilsner Urquell Brewery, is the birthplace of the world's renowned lager Pilsner Urquell. It is the biggest brewery in the Czech Republic.
