Tallinn Old Town is a unique place where you feel like in a fairytale. But in the modern world, it is difficult to step out of your character. Olde Hansa Restaurant makes it easy – just step in, and you will find yourself in the 15th century. Feel and dine like a wealthy noble

The 15th-century feeling

If you are getting tired of our hectic times, all the technology and modern widgets, in Tallinn, you can step right into the 15th century. You don’t even need to take out and dust off your time machine. All you have to do is go to Olde Hansa! And trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Every small detail in Olde Hansa is thought trough. The house has collaborated with various historians and researchers of the Medieval era to create an authentic merchants house. The recipes used in the kitchen are dated back to the 15th century. You will find yourself in a wealthy merchants house, where you could easily forget the real world. Just sit down in the candlelight and enjoy being served as a wealthy noble. Choose something from the long menu of carefully picked dishes and enjoy a cup of warming honey beer. It doesn’t matter what you choose, all the dishes will leave you in awe. You can taste aromatic cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, pepper, saffron and cloves in the food, making it a hearty meal. While waiting for your food, enjoy the troubadours playing the works of composers who played fiddles, bagpipes and flutes in the 15th century. You can hear rare songs and stories from the Scandinavian kings' courts and famous mystical cantigas speaking of miracles, saints and dragons

Lady of the house is always right

For more common folk, there is III Draakon around the corner. It’s a medieval pub, where all the meals cost 1-3 euros. It’s a real bargain, considering the location, Raekoja square, that is known for expensive restaurants. The lady of the house will welcome you with a big smile but be warned – the visitor is the king, but the lady of the house is always right! “And don’t forget to put your used plates in the basket,” she says. “You are not in your grandma’s house!” The most popular dish is the elk meat soup. Take a fresh meat pie to go with it to get your tummy full, and try to catch a pickle from the barrel – if you can do it, the pickle is yours free of charge.

Sugar and spices

If you prefer to have a bite on the road, you can find Olde Hansa’s cart in many places in the Old Town. There, you can try and buy sweet almonds that are made with 16 spices and 4 different sugars, inspired by ancient recipes. To take some of that medieval vibe with you, you can visit Olde Hansa's shop, where you can purchase handmade ceramics, handblown glassware, iron works, beers and schnapps, honey and jams, as well as soaps and candles
