Novi Sad is a slower and simpler version of a big city. It has refreshing energy and positive vibes that just get you into liking it as soon as you see it. In Serbia, it’s often called the cultural capital of the country. It homes various theaters, culture centers, festivals, and among other things, one of the biggest art hubs in Europe.

Why there is an art hub in the medieval fortress

When the mighty Petrovaradin Fortress become a national monument in the mid-20 century, the group of people got an idea that the position of the fortress may be an ideal place for the artistic inspiration and creation. Even the city government, politicians, and citizens greeted the idea with ovations, so the art colony quickly started growing and expanding. Some of the most prominent artists have been creating in the chambers turned to ateliers and galleries of the Petrovaradin fortress.

Since the start of the colony, more than 400 artists used these ateliers. Artists, poets, composers, thinkers and curious minds have passed through these halls. They give the invaluable contribution to both Serbian and European cultural and art scene.

What these art ateliers offer today

Currently, around 100 artists use these 5.000 square meters of space, turned into 80 ateliers and galleries. The artists of different profiles, interests, and generations, come together with the common motivation to create. In words of the local Art Association, more than 80.000 pieces of arts came out of the Petrovaradin art hub, and now decorate the walls of Serbian and European buildings likewise.

An artistic afternoon in Petrovaradin Fortress

Petrovaradin Fortress is a perfect place for an afternoon walk. Aside from being an inspiring artists’ residence, the fortress is also a favorite spot for many local sunset hunters. Maybe you could finish the walk in one of the ateliers, that are open almost every day. You can come inside, take a look around and ask questions. Serbs are generally known for their hospitality, and these creative minds will gladly share with you the stories of their artworks, personal inspiration or local tips.

Who knows, you may even leave the fortress with the highly sophisticated souvenir.
