If someone is willing to explore all the best rural restaurants in Hungary, they have to go around the whole country. Looking at the beautiful countryside of Hungary, we get to surprisingly great restaurants in the most surprising places. Sometimes, even with the metropolitan standards, the quality of food and service is impressive. Therefore, it's not worth contemplating too much. I suggest you buy the train tickets with your friends and explore the Hungarian countryside cuisine!
Anyukám mondta’s kitchen and the quality of their offer are constantly evolving, and in my opinion, the fact of the evolution is undoubted. The chef's style is difficult to categorize, but it's characterized by modern conceptualization and a combination of Italian and Hungarian traditional cuisines. It's definitely worth a visit, as you shall not miss the opportunity to taste those very special meals.
Lake Balaton and its unique towns are popular tourist destinations. Thus, you don’t even have to travel too much from here to reach further worthy scenes of life at the Lake, such as Siófok or Zamárdi, the home to Balaton Sound Festival. Kistücsök restaurant in Balatonszemes, that celebrated its 25th birthday last year, is a widely renowned star of the Balaton region. The restaurant, that is open all year round, has a great number of frequenters, but also, plenty of tourists visit this place. The owner's personality, the quality of the kitchen and the family-friendly staff of the restaurant complete the whole experience.
Sauska 48 is one of the best wine-tasting restaurants in its region, but since 2017 the Sauska estate welcomes their guests with a new conception. The chef calls the concept a "modern peasant gourmet", which means a simple rural, sincere kitchen style. The spirit of the kitchen and its way of thinking are perfectly adapted to the reality of the countryside, Villány and the winery region.
One of the most outstanding restaurants in the South Hungarian region operates as a part of a boutique hotel in Szeged, which is the third biggest city in Hungary. Tiszavirág has a very modern, progressive cuisine, in which local ingredients also play an important role. In addition to the "traditional" Hungarian dishes, Szeged’s well-known course, fish soup is also displayed. Meanwhile, the international specialties are also provided, and the kitchen strives for seasonality.
Macok is a very popular and decisive culinary point in Eger, located at the foot of the world-famous castle. The kitchen strives to use local ingredients and to have exceptionally good relationships with local producers. It offers the specialties such as Szilvásvárad’s fingerling or a well-known Bükk’s cheese selection. And if you are in Eger, tasting the distinguished, local wines is a must. And this place has some of the best of them, trust me!
Well, these were just a few examples of the excellence in Hungarian countryside cuisine, that I highly recommend you to explore! I know, I know, your first idea is always visiting Budapest when it comes to Hungary, but as a country girl, I do know that the countryside heavenly restaurants are also splendid in this country.
