Explore the underground of Eastern Slovakia: 3 spectacular caves

Beautiful and untouched nature is definitely a reason to visit Slovakia. Besides beautiful mountains, it also has about 2400 caves;** with new caves being discovered regularly. Of course, not all the caves are open to the public yet, but I will introduce you to some that are. Here is a list of 3 spectacular caves you must visit to explore the cold underground of Eastern Slovakia**. 

Belianska Jaskyňa

Belianska Jaskyňa is one of the most visited caves in Slovakia. Mother Nature was really creative here, as you will notice upon entering. Inside the cave, you can see bizarre shapes and formations, for example, the "Leaning Tower of Pisa". The whole tour is quite a walk - about 1,5 kilometers long and takes 70 minutes to complete. The temperature is usually around 5 degrees Celsius, so make sure you have a jacket with you. The most breathtaking part is a waterfall and the so-called "Music Hall". The "Music Hall" has excellent acoustics, so sometimes there are classical music concerts held there. Dobšinská Ľadová Jaskyňa

Dobšinská Ľadová Jaskyňa is very well-known ice cave of the international importance, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Dobšinská Ľadová Jaskyňa is located at an altitude of 950 meters above sea level. The temperature inside the cave fluctuates between -3 and 3 degrees Celsius - that is why it is called the Ice Cave. It's really magnificent, but I don't want to spoil it to you; it's better to see it for yourself. Another interesting fact is that, until the 1950s, it was possible to ice-skate directly in the cave (even in the summer) and it was used for both military training and figure skating training for the Olympics. 

Domica Cave

The Cave Domica is also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and it is within a reachable distance from the second biggest city of Slovakia - Košice. This cave is special because it has a very high number of bat species. Secondly, parts of this cave lie under the Hungarian territory, meaning that you can also enter the cave from Hungary. The tour of the Domica Cave includes a boat ride in the cave lake, perfect for taking photos. This cave is the warmest one from my list - the temperature rises up to 11 degrees Celsius, which may be the reason why many archaeological artifacts were found here. 

Even if you decide to visit these caves in summer, pack your winter hat, scarf, and gloves, and start exploring the spectacular underground of Eastern Slovakia.
