The city is buzzing with students – yeap it’s a lively city- and like Amsterdam it’s a city where -as a student or a tourist- you can lose your mind! At the same time, it’s also the world's largest port, home to the massive Europoort facility through which so much freight passes on its way to and from the continent, fact that makes the city an industrial paradise with a great and competitive job market! Today, it's as popular a destination for its vibrant entertainment options as it is for its many fine museums and splendid architecture. If you visit Rotterdam for the first time or if you only have a couple of hours, you can still experience the maritime atmosphere with major Rotterdam tourist attractions, and discover the city by typical sights of Rotterdam like the Old Harbour. In any case, Rotterdam is a cosmopolitan city with much to offer for both locals and visitors. It’s never a boring day in this harbour city due to a great variety of leisure activities. Diergaarde Blijdorp is a zoo in the northwestern part of Rotterdam, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. In 2007 it celebrated its 150th anniversary.

- Marvel at the feat of engineering that is the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, or Erasmusbrug. It's been nicknamed ‘the Swan’, or ‘De Zwaan’ by locals, for its white colour and birdlike shape. We think it looks more like a massive harp, don’t you? Either way, at 134 meters tall, the second biggest bridge in the Netherlands is definitely a sight to behold.
- Erasmburg crosses the Nieuw Maas in Rotterdam’s centre; it connects the city’s north and south and sits in the world’s largest harbour. Snap a picture of this architectural work of art which can be seen from many parts of the city. 
- Crossing the bridge is best done on a bike tour of the city. From the centre of town, you’ll peddle your way across to get to places like Delfshaven’s historic harbour or the futuristic Kop van Zuid and Wilhelminapier. There you’ll find Hotel New York, the Netherlands Photomuseum, and the Fenix Food Factory.

The Kunsthal is a museum in Rotterdam, which opened its doors in 1992.

The museum is situated in the Museumpark of Rotterdam next to the Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, and in the vicinity of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Entrance to the Kunsthal is from the Westzeedijk. The building was designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

The Kunsthal has no permanent collection, but organises a wide range of temporary exhibits. The large space available 3,300 m2 (36,000 sq ft) allows various exhibits in parallel. The range of exhibitions presented at the Kunsthal ranges from 20th century masters to current contemporary art movements.

Recently the museum had exhibitions featuring artists such as Chuck Close, Andy Warhol and Arne Quinze.

The Maritime Museum Rotterdam is a maritime museum in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Dedicated to naval history, it was founded in 1874 by Prince Henry of the Netherlands.

Next to the Maritime Museum lies the open-air Maritime Museum Harbour, which merged with the Maritime Museum in 2014. The Maritime Museum Harbour contains an exceptional collection of historic vessels and cranes which are maintained in working condition.

This lush garden really comes to life in the spring when it welcomes new colourful flowers to bloom, more greenery to thrive and visitors to enjoy the picturesque beauty that happens right here in Rotterdam.

- **Botanical paradise** as tranquil as a private garden in a rural out of town enclosure, this easy to reach flora and fauna haven has a beautiful collection of plants and trees and a calm atmosphere.
- Easily lose track of time here discovering the many different plant species, some relatively rare, all presenting interesting photo opportunities, along with a few beautiful sculptures and water features, adding to the picturesque mood of the grounds.
- See the cactus greenhouse, a common visitor favourite! And be present in the moment with the bees, butterflies, birds and even turtles that peacefully roam around the gardens.
- It is wheelchair-accessible and has plenty of resting places with lovely views
- Walking tours of the gardens are on Sundays with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
- You can also find the tea house here with a diverse menu. Try the cakes, they’re a delicious treat you won’t want to miss! 
At the last stop of your visit, there is a small gift shop with some quaint curios and original artworks.

Arboretum Trompenburg

The Netherlands Photo Museum (NFM) is a museum in the Netherlands primarily focused on photography.

The museum collection consists of many historical, social and cultural images from the 20th and 21st century, from the Netherlands and elsewhere. It has control over more than 150 archives (three million plus images) taken by Dutch photographers. The archives are stored in climate controlled film storage facilities.

It is located in Rotterdam at the Wilhelminakade in the previous Holland America Line workshop building, also known as the Las Palmas building.

The Netherlands Photo Museum was founded in 1989, under the name Nederlands Foto Archief. and was subsidised by the Dutch government. In 2003, it was reborn, through an endowment from Hein Wertheimer, a wealthy Dutch lawyer, and renamed to Nederlands Fotomuseum.

Visitors to the NFM may browse the museum’s library of 120000 digital images, watch short films or participate in educational activities. The museum has large exhibition rooms and a rotating display of Dutch history.

Cube houses are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level, since its main purpose is to optimise the space inside. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside.

## In Rotterdam you'll find inviting terraces everywhere: all over the heart of the city, tucked away among (and sometimes even on top of) the gleaming skyscrapers, on the riverside quays, in the rolling green parks and in the trendy neighbourhoods around the city centre. Those are our favorite!



Located on the Katendrecht waterfront, this **rustic foodie spot** is the lesser known indoor market in Rotterdam, with the giant Markthal being most famous. If you are looking for fresh food, look no further - this place has everything! 

There are cheese makers, a bakery, grocery store butchers and fishmongers. You’ll also find a dedicated soda pop shop, a brewery making experimental craft beers and a shop selling pure, natural European wines. All **local businesses** and produce, which is always a bonus! 

Inside the former warehouse you’ll also find a **takeaway deli** with loads of tasty options. The menu changes with the seasons and is mostly made with the products sold by the market’s local entrepreneurs. So, there’ll always be something new to try. There’s also different food stands, think gourmet burgers and tacos, for you to sample as well. 

The food factory is a hotspot for Rotterdam’s locals. Sit outside on the appropriately **rustic terrace** and soak up the industrial-chic vibes as you tuck into your tasty delicacy of choice. It’s right alongside the River Maas, perfect for enjoying the **city views** or taking a break before you head back inside for round 2!
