Spring is upon us and we're ready for a few weeks of flower power before summer kicks in! What better way to enjoy the spring blooms than on a spring hike? These hiking trails are not only some of the best hikes in Belgium, but offer up some of the most beautiful places to visit in the country during the springtime. From blooming blossoms to flower fields, grab your boots and your camera and check out these spring walks this season.

1. Alden Biesen

Alden Biesen Castle, also known as the Grand Commandery, stands proud as one of the oldest and largest castle domains in Northern Europe. And whilst sure, the castle is impressive, it’s the surrounding nature that makes it extra special. Take a hike around the area in springtime to discover blossom-lined boardwalks and colourful castle gardens. This really is a beautiful place to visit. There are 3 different trails to choose from varying in lengths, and you’ll find all the details by clicking below.

Best time for blooms: Mid-April

Our trail pick: Yellow Trail, 16km

Where to Stay nearby

Boerderaaj - Tucked within a renovated stable, this stay comes with access to a lovely sauna and hot tub!

Hotel Monte Cristo - With an indoor swimming pool, fitness centre and free private parking - this affordable luxury has everything you need in one place.

B&B De Oude Winning - In an authentic Haspengouw-style courtyard farm dating back to the 18th century, you can rent bicycles here or play table tennis and darts at your ease.

2. Hallerbos Bluebell Walk

Is blue your favourite colour? Hallerbos is the spring walk spot for you. This stunning woodland boasts a beautiful bluebell carpet in Spring, earning itself the name ‘The Blue Forest’. The deep purple-blue covering the forest floor is a sight to behold and one that you shouldn’t miss as April comes around! It wouldn’t be a flower-filled list without Hallerbos, and for good reason. Hallerbos is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Belgium at this time of year, so bring a picnic and your camera for a walk to remember. Bear in mind that the woods can get extremely busy during the bluebell season so, if you’re looking for the quietest periods, get there early and avoid the weekends.

Best time for blooms: While the locals might say the best time to visit is mid-April, the bluebells don’t actually bloom at the same time every year due to variations in the weather. Stay up to date on the Hallerbos website, which you can find on the page above.

Our trail pick: From the 14th April there will be two 5km Bluebell Walks in the forest. Find the map to the trails here.

3. Borgloon Walks

One of the best places for blossoms in Belgium is Haspengouw, nestled into southern Limburg and known for its rolling hills and fruit orchards. In Spring the landscape becomes dotted with pink and white flowering fruit trees, and the walks of Borgloon are the perfect place to get your flower fix. With routes ranging between 4 and 12km, each trail explores the nearby orchards, including Speelboomgaard, as well as the unique Doorkijkkerk church which is a beautiful place to visit in itself.

4. Rivierenhof Park Magnolia Route

Rivierenhof Park is the perfect place for some springtime fun with heaps of cool things to do amongst the spring blooms. With castles, ponds, a rose garden and a fairytale house, we’re not sure there’s a more picture-perfect spot for the flower season. But we digress. When it comes to a spring walk, Rivierenhof have got you covered with their digital magnolia route; a 4.4km trail through the park showcasing a selection of over 140 planted magnolias. All you have to do is get the app and download the route straight onto your phone. This one is perfect for true flower-buffs as the digital route includes info (in Dutch) about the types of magnolias you’ll find along the way.

Best time for blooms: March - June

Our trail pick: Digital Magnolia Route, 4.4km, available from 15 March. Find more info here.

5. Daffodil hike along the Holzwarche

So, we’ve done blue. How about yellow? To the east of Belgium, near the Dutch border, you’ll find a yellow-lover’s paradise in fields upon fields of wild daffodils. This stunning daffodil walk takes you along the Holzwarche river, through rolling landscapes and valleys filled with the iconic flowers. Park at this handy spot for direct access to the daffodil fields and check out this route recommended by Glenn Vanderbeke. You can also see the daffodils on this 19.4km route from Weißer Stein. If you hike through the daffodils this spring, be sure to stick to the paths and respect the flowers as you’re walking through!

6. Muziekbos

Muziekbos is another great option for a spring hiking trail in Belgium. The forest floor is covered in bluebells from April to May and you’ll find the woodland a lot less busy than the popular paths of Hallerbos. The Muziekbos walking route lets you experience the sights and sounds of nature, blooming hyacinths and beautiful panoramas of the Ardennes.

7. Margijs Walk

Starting from the small town of Neerijse in Flemish Brabant, the Margijs walk might just be one of the best hikes in Belgium in the Spring. Starting from the town’s castle (of course the town has a castle), this 8km walk will take you through heaps of spring blooms including cherry blossom tunnels, rapeseed fields and, once you get to the Margijs Wood, bluebells. The flower power is real on this one and, along with the ponds, meadows and rivers, you’ll feel like you stepped right into a painting.

Best time for blooms: Mid-end April

Our trail pick: Margijs Walk, 8km

8. Ninglinspo Walk

Ninglinspo is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places to visit in Belgium and what better time than the Spring?! You’ll see nature quite frankly showing off here through waterfalls, valleys, forests, and all of the flora and fauna along the way. For your real flower fix, be sure to include La Charmille on your route - a 573m tunnel made up of more than 4,700 plants! Spring is the perfect time to see the leaves forming in the tunnel, and walking through the archway is the perfect setting for that springtime snap.

Best time for blooms: April

Our trail pick: Red Diamond, 14.6km
