Hiking and swimming around Javea - Cala Moraig famous coves

I love doing one-day trips to discover new places in the Valencian Community, especially in summer when you can enjoy the Mediterranean Sea and plenty of its crystal clear coves. Jávea (in Alicante province) has, without any doubt, some of the most beautiful coves I have seen so far, with very unique surroundings. It is also one of the wealthiest areas in Alicante, where lots of British and German people retire and buy luxurious houses and apartments. Walking and hiking around Javea’s cliffs feels like a privilege nowadays (since there are not many tourists or people there), and I had the opportunity to do a hiking route through these cliffs with amazing views of the sea.  On the same day, we visited two coves: an awesome cove, Cala Moraig, and I had the first swim of 2019 there, and another one known as Cala Llebeig that is more hidden and less accessible! Hiking route on the cliffs of Benitatxell-Moraira

The hiking route is commonly known as the Route of the cliffs of Benitatxell-Moraira, that starts next to Cala Moraig and finishes in the least known and hidden, Cala Llebeig (Moraira). This last cove can only be reached on foot (through the route I am about to explain by the Barranco de la Viuda), or by sea. It is a short route, about 4 km there and back, and it can be done in a couple of hours. I need to say that it is not suitable for all ages and conditions since the path runs along a cliff and is not well looked after. There are also dangerous, slippery areas so don’t forget to bring proper shoes for this (and forget about flip-flops). Also, bring plenty of water because there are no places like bars or restaurants nearby.

Along the way we saw many caves built with stone and mud, taking advantage of the hollows of the rock, which people used as a shelter from the sun and the rain. They were mostly used by the fishermen and farmers of Benitatxell (the closest town) and smugglers hiding in them waiting for the arrival of drums laden with tobacco, cloth, silk stockings, and Manila shawls. Once we reached the Cala LLebeig, which has very peaceful surroundings, we stayed there having a picnic and enjoying the quietness of this hidden cove. After an hour we headed back to the main cove, Cala Moraig, and we spent the rest of the afternoon there enjoying the water and the May sunshine!

I really think now is the perfect time to visit these amazing places, before it gets hotter (it is already 27 degrees in Valencia) and before the coves in Javea start to get a bit busier. Go on an adventure and feel like a mermaid swimming in this amazing water!
