Because of its rich history and the location, people used to call my country, Hungary, the historical treasure in the heart of Europe. However, it’s not the only reason why it is so unique. Okay, I know that almost everyone talk about their own country like that, but still. Hungary is full of amazing places, fascinating buildings that brings you back to the 17-18th century; it has beautiful natural treasures to offer - through the mountains to the lakes -, really delicious, but spicy food, and great wines, as you guys might have heard of before.
Even if you have never been to our capital city, you must have heard about the famous nightlife of Budapest. The city that never stops, I could say with ease. Tourists like it so much, because the pubs and the clubs are cheap for West-European prices, and there are a bunch of places to warm up for the party at. You are deeply recommended to try Hungarian wines, which are really popular around the world, so definitely give them a try. And oh, we cannot forget to mention Sziget Festival. It is one of the biggest festivals in Europe with a lot of famous singers, bands and DJs on the stages. The tickets are not that cheap, but it’s totally worth it, trust me.
A prime example of how a few simple ingredients, cooked properly, can make an incredible flavour is the no.1 traditional food: the Hungarian goulash. Many variations of the locals’ all-time favourite soup exist, but the original recipe is cheekily easy. Depending on your taste, you can make it out of chicken, pork or beef. The authentic goulash though is made of beef. Watch out! I don’t really recommend it, if you are on a diet. Hungarian dishes are often full of calories, and they can be extremely spicy, as I wrote before, but so far I have never heard from a tourist, that they hadn’t liked it. So give them a go, if you are being here!
If you come to Hungary, and stay for a few days, don’t forget to visit Lake Balaton, which should be your second destination after Budapest – roughly a 1-hour-trip from it. It practically doesn’t matter at all, if you go to the south-, or the north side of the biggest lake of Central-Europe - both are lively and relaxing at the same time. You can enjoy the water during the daytime, and go out when the sun goes down – oh, those fabulous and spectacular sunsets... Music festivals take place here as well, including Balaton Sound, which beside Sziget is also a huge, huge one!
All in all I can bravely establish, that Hungarians are commonly kind and lovely people, good and caring hosts too. Even though, with a population of 10 million citizens, my country is one of the smallest on the continent, it has a whole lot to offer, especially to those, who like adventures. So once again: I firmly suggest, that you explore Hungary, the historical treasure in the heart of Europe!
