History buffs have been obsessing about Egyptian and Mayan pyramids for a very long time. We have numerous hypothesis and possible scenarios of how, when and why they were built, but their story remains covered in a veil of wonder. Could Europe be another continent to hide an ancient pyramid? Although it doesn’t sound very likely, there are some mysteries surrounding Rtanj Mountain in Serbia, suggesting that it could be the world’s newest discovered pyramid.

Topography of Rtanj Mountain

Rtanj is the mountain in Eastern Serbia, 200 km south of Belgrade, and close to the small town Boljevac. The highest point reaches 1565 meters. Geographically, Rtanj is a mountain of very interesting properties. It’s famous for making the visitors very thirsty, because all the water goes down through the limestone, and it comes out on the basis of the mountain forming numerous wells and streams.

The Most Common Theories About Rtanj

Rtanj was always a favorite subject for many local legends and even traditional superstitions. In the past, a rich family Minh used to own a former coal mine in the mountain. The man of the house, Mr. Minh, committed suicide under unknown circumstances and his wife, Mrs. Minh had a small chapel built on top of the Rtanj Mountain. The chapel was destroyed some twenty years ago, by locals who were searching for the hidden gold from local myths and its ruins can still be found in the top.

Many people have reported seeing unidentified lights in the night sky above the mountain. The words of a UFO, aliens, and magic are sometimes mentioned. Some conspiracy theorists will swear to have measured unexplained radiation around this area. Many believe that the rich nature, endemic plants, and before-mentioned lights are the legacy of extraterrestrial visitors, who build the pyramid hidden in the mountain.

The Nature and Culture Around Rtanj

The flora of Rtanj Mountain is famous for endemic and rare species of plants. There is a special endemic, aromatic plant that people use for making the special Rtanj Tea. It is one of the favorite natural remedies of Serbian people. It's very helpful for diabetes and breathing problems.

Rtanj is a home for an independent arts and music festival Mount of Artan that welcomes psychedelic rock and metal fans from Serbia and surrounding countries. The festival first started in 2003. It has always been free and with a free camp. In organizers’ own words “It collects the finest of the Balkan’s underground”

Similar to the neighboring pyramids of Bosnia, there are no scientific proofs to support that Rtanj is a hidden pyramid. The speculations themselves created a cloud of mysteries and wonder and made this place that much more worth visiting, exploring and debating about.
