Kékestető, the highest point of Hungary

Kékestető, the highest point of Hungary with its beautiful panorama and fresh, high-altitude air is the most beloved destination for hikers. It is a part of the legendary Blue Tour (Kéktúra) route, and it has been officially declared a climatic health resort since 1963. Kékestető and its fascinating natural wonders can be explored in the framework of individual and organized tours for those who are looking for adventure.

The wonders of the east side

There are hundreds of organized tours to the highest point, but I would suggest the medium one for everyone who hasn’t practiced before. It is not easy, but not the hardest one. I guess it could be accomplished by the ones who do sport a few times per week. It is called the wonders of the east side. It runs along the 21st section of the National Blue Trail between Mátraháza, Kékestető and Sirok. Because of the varied terrain, it is perhaps one of the most beautiful and exciting parts of the main hiking trail. It takes 3-4 hours and is about 7 kilometers long.

A bicycle trail for families

A 90-km-long bicycle trail in Mátra is especially recommended for families and hobby bikers. Professional mountain bikers got new challenges and training opportunities when in 2016 the cycling route on the forest roads was handed over, bringing the whole thing to a new level. This active recreation and close-to-sports experience is a lifetime adventure for all ages, and furthermore, we can explore a new face of the mountain.

Gastronomy and accomodation

If you are around and desire to have some mulled wine, HE-DO Bar is the best you can find. With its breath-taking panorama, it is one of the most frequented places at Kékestető, when it comes to gastronomy. However, they don't offer accommodation.

If you get hungry after a long day of skiing, I suggest you visit Tető (means roof) Restaurant. In the immediate neighborhood of the north side, you can find this self-service restaurant, where everyone can enjoy the traditional "next to the piste” dishes. 

If you are willing to stay for a night, Kékesi Guesthouse is the best choice. In the individually designed building, there are 7 rooms, 2 living rooms and a specially light-decorated, 50-seat, cozy restaurant.

The best place for ski lovers

Kékestető with its 1014 meters of altitude is the highest point of Hungary, and that is where the longest downhill course (which is 1,8 kilometers long) of the country starts. Not surprising so that this the best place for ski lovers. The piste is ideal for the beginners and families alike. On Kékestető, the pine trees dominate the forest, setting a beautiful scenery to the skiers. The ski and snowboard instructors educate the individual and small groups, but they also undertake the teaching school groups and companionships. It costs 5500 HUF (15 euros) per day, and it’s a bit cheaper than in other countries.
