I’m not gonna start this page by saying that “if you’re a nature lover then you should definitely visit this garden”; I’ll just tell you this; even if you’re not a big fan of the flowery sceneries and you’d prefer doing different types of activities…still this garden would amaze you! Visiting Keukenhof was one of my most pleasant and colorful experiences ever!
Keukenhof, also known as the Garden of Europe, is one of the world's largest flower gardens. It is situated in Lisse, the Netherlands. According to the official website for the Keukenhof Park, approximately 7 million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park, which covers an area of 32 hectares (79 acres). That sounds like a lot right? Well, they are…and now I challenge you to imagine how they look like in real life! Just breathtaking…
The whole park looks like a flowery paradise. You can walk around, meet people, take awesome & bright colourful pictures, organise a picnic with your friends, or just drink coffee and chill!
Keukenhof is open annually from mid-March to mid-May. The best time to see the tulips is around mid-April, depending on the weather. At the same time it’s really easy to get there; only a few minutes far from Amsterdam, the public transportation will get you to the garden, right on time for the big flower parade! And yes, that’s also quite impressive! They actually build dolls and chariots made out of flowers…and yes they do organise a weekly parade!
Still haven’t convinced you? Well, let me tell you my personal experience…Let me start by saying that I would never characterise myself as a “flower person"; it’s not that I don’t like them, but definitely I wouldn’t be googling “Gardens to see” while being in a foreign country. This visit happened kinda accidentally… and to sum it up for you, I could name and recall it as “The best kick-your -hangover-away destination”. So in a few words, one day we all woke up with a terrible hangover (yes, it was my friend’s bday party the night before). The rain in the city I lived wasn’t that great and we all decided that we have to move to “some place", with “some park” and “some sun”; a friend then suggested Keukenhof. We loved the idea and after all, the only thing we had to do was to get in the train. We ended up having an “all day long picnic” in the gardens of Keukenhof and laying among the flowers till the time that we had to leave. We took so many pictures and created great memories! And yes, with no doubt we kicked easily our hangover away…
So even if you’re not a nature lover…Keukenhof is a garden that offers you a great relaxing and get-away from reality experience! Do not miss the chance to visit it!
Plus; there are cities around that are worth taking a look! Get in the train and explore them! They’re only a few minutes away from each other! If you have some time… then Leiden is the one that I would 100% personally recommend!
