King's Day in Amsterdam

Every year when April is approaching, my mind goes back to my twenties and I instantly start checking tickets to my forever favourite destination, Amsterdam. While living in the Netherlands as a student, I had the chance to explore and experience the dutch culture as a local; however, this time, I am here to present a quite mainstream event/attraction that shouldn’t be missed while in Amsterdam. And that of course is the KING’S DAY!

Background Info;

I guess most of you are already familiar with the king’s day celebrations happening in Amsterdam, right? If not, let me give you some background info; King’s Day is when the Dutch celebrate the birthday of their king. King Willem Alexander was born on 27 April and so there are many parties, flea markets and, of course, the king himself visits one or several cities with his family. King's Day (formerly Queen's Day) festivities invite locals and visitors alike to soak up Amsterdam's open-air fun. In the streets, canals, parks and everywhere in between, the city is bursting with orange as Amsterdammers enjoy the biggest street party of the year.Amidst orange-pride, live music, DJs, parties and a citywide street market, you'll find an electric atmosphere not to be missed.

The Amsterdammers and the tourists from all over the world dress in orange and celebrate from the early morning the King’s birthday. The whole country transforms into an orange bubble; wherever you go you will encounter with orange people dancing, singing and drinking. The whole city is decorated of course in orange, and the party doesn’t stop until the late late hours.

If you are a festival type of person, then save the date cause you should definitely add this in your agenda; 27 of April. Beside the street parties, as we all know, the Dutch people know how to organise properly a music festival, with globally famous Djs’ and artists being featured. As a result, on the same day, there are multiple electronic music festivals spread in clubs and venues throughout the city; by checking the calendar that follows you can stay informed and updated for all the upcoming events in Amsterdam. After all, Amsterdam is the capital of the electronic music festivals! Personally, I’d strongly suggest you to attend one of those…ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!

...and here's the calendar!

So… convince your friends, buy “whatever orange”you might find in the stores (sunglasses, scarfs, clothes, flowers, etc), and get ready to have the time of your life. As I did.. and doing every year since 2013 :D

Cheers!
