The Grand Palais in Paris dedicates a retrospective exposition to the Czech painter and graphic artist František Kupka (also know as Frank Kupka), entitled “Kupka. Pioneer of abstraction” from March 21st to July 30th 2018.
The exposition “Kupka. Pioneer of abstraction" introduces you to the world of the artist, with his early work marked by symbolism followed by his evolution towards abstraction and becoming one of its most eminent pioneers that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. A total of 300 works are exhibited: paintings, newspapers, manuscripts, engravings, photographs, films, drawings etc. allowing the public to enter in the specific universe of the artist. The exhibition also focuses on the key moments of his creative period, the symbolist masterpieces and his first Parisian expressionist portraits, but also his path toward the abstract art and his period called "machinist" in the late 1920s.
This retrospective exposition that also highlights Kupka's taste for philosophy, religions, science, poetry and ancient and oriental cultures is open in the sumptuous Grand Palais exhibition hall, located at the Champs-Elysees, probably one the most recognizable avenues in the world. Construction of the Grand Palais began in 1897 as part of the Universal Exposition of 1900, which also included the creation of the adjacent Petit Palais and Pont Alexandre III. The Grand Palais has been listed as a historical monument since 2000.
