This lovely small town is located in the northeastern part of the Kakheti Region. Just a 1.5-hour drive away from the capital Tbilisi and you will be able to enjoy the most magnificent views of the Caucasus Mountains. Kvareli is famous for its wineries and centuries-old wine-making tradition. The red semi-sweet wine “Kindzmarauli” is their all favorite wine.

In my opinion, Kvareli is the most beautiful city in the Kakheti Region, thanks to its nature and views of mountains all around it. It was the hometown of one of the most famous Georgian writers, political figures, poets and publishers - Ilia Chavchavadze, who was also called “the father of the nation.” He wrote the poem “Kvareli Mountains” to describe its beauty.

A unique winery

There are many wineries in Kvareli; however, the most favorite place of tourists is the winery “Khareba,” which offers a unique experience – a tour in the mysterious tunnel (Gvirabi). This tunnel was opened in 1962 for the World Wine Congress, and it is almost 8 km long.

Nowadays, tourists are able to see showrooms and hear stories while walking in a small part of this tunnel. Being in this place guarantees a very memorable experience as at the end of the tour, they offer the degustation of different kinds of wines and many more interesting activities. For example, you can take part in the process of making bread and churchkhela (national sweet). You can also taste Georgian Chacha (vodka) and have a tasty Georgian dinner in their restaurant with beautiful views over the waterfall and a magical garden.

Gremi Church

The next sightseeing option is an architectural monument that has survived from the town of Gremi. It dates back to the 16th century. This church is located on the way to Kvareli and looks magnificent in any season.

Nekresi Monastery

After Gremi Church, you can visit the Nekresi Monastery, which is just 10 minutes away from Gremi. This place is very famous for its impressive views over the Alazani Valley. This monastery is located on the hill, so you have to either drive to it for 1.5 km or go on foot. The 13 Siryan fathers founded this complex in the 6th century. Their aim when visiting Georgia was to spread and strengthen Christianity.

Lakes and much more

How about having some rest after exploring these historical places in and around Kvareli? You can visit magnificent lakes in this town. Let us start with Ilia Lake, which was made artificially. This lake is very famous, especially during summertime. Mountains surround it. You can enjoy amazing views and visit the beautiful park and cafes around the lake.

Another one is Kvareli Lake, which belongs to a hotel with a huge recreational area. It is one of the best places to relax in nature.

By the way, do not forget to communicate with the locals, as they are very nice and hospitable people. You enjoy exploring Kvareli even more if you see this place 'with their eyes.'
