Lecce is one of the most beautiful cities in P[uglia](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/top-4-reasons-to-visit-apulia-uci6). Its baroque churches and its city gates together with narrow sandstone streets and typical Italian architecture make Lecce an almost magical place. Without a doubt, Lecce has many interesting sights and museums to be visited but rather than having a list to tick off from , it is simply worth experiencing its unique charm.

In order to be able to "experience the city" and feel its vibes, all you have to do is walk down any street of the historical center; at some point it will bring you to a relaxing café, a classy wine bar or an authentic Italian restaurant. Soak up the atmosphere while drinking a cold coffee with almond milk (caffé leccese) or a glass of local wine, while enjoying the view on the extravagant details of a baroque church.

If you wish to feel Lecce's unique charm, there are some places you should include in your strolls through the city.

City gates

There are three remaining city gates to enter the historical center of Lecce: Porta Napoli, Porta Rudiae and Porta San Biagio. All of them are built in the famous detailed leccese baroque style. While all of them are worth seeing, Porta Napoli is probably the most famous and impressive one, being surrounded by an alley of blooming oleander trees.

Piazza Sant'Oronzo

The main square of Lecce`s historical center combines a great variety of architectural styles while at the same time, it still maintains the typical Italian charm. The heart of the square is an ancient Roman amphitheater dating back to the second century A.D. Within a walking distance from Piazza Sant'Oronzo, two of most popular churches in Lecce are waiting to be visited: Basilica di Santa Croce and Le[cce Cathedral (Duomo di Lecce)](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/piazzas-in-italy-piazza-del-duomo-lecce-vhfc).

Via Vittorio Emanuele

It is the main street of the historical center in Lecce. Alongside there are many shops, cafes and restaurants which invite the visitors to linger and browse. The street is busiest when locals gather for a “pre-dinner-walk” (passeggiata serale) and stroll through the golden sandstone street with their families and friends.

Where to stay in Lecce

When you plan your trip to Lecce you should definitely look for a place in the historical center. There are great places which combine the architectural and local history with the modern day comfort. The charming B&B Vi[co della Cavallerezza](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/) perfectioned this idea, by transforming a steep in history building into wonderful guest rooms, each with their own balcony overlooking the narrow cobblestone streets. A stay there guarantees diving into the unique local atmosphere while having all commodities. For more info and booking details visit:
