Lecce – experience the city's unique charm

Lecce is one of the most beautiful cities in P[uglia](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/top-4-reasons-to-visit-apulia-uci6). Its baroque churches and its city gates together with narrow sandstone streets and typical Italian architecture make Lecce an almost magical place. City gates

There are three remaining city gates to enter the historical center of Lecce: Porta Napoli, Porta Rudiae and Porta San Biagio. All of them are built in the famous detailed leccese baroque style. While all of them are worth seeing, Porta Napoli is probably the most famous and impressive one, being surrounded by an alley of blooming oleander trees.

Piazza Sant'Oronzo

The main square of Lecce`s historical center combines a great variety of architectural styles while at the same time, it still maintains the typical Italian charm. The heart of the square is an ancient Roman amphitheater dating back to the second century A.D. Within a walking distance from Piazza Sant'Oronzo, two of most popular churches in Lecce are waiting to be visited: Basilica di Santa Croce and Le[cce Cathedral (Duomo di Lecce)](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/piazzas-in-italy-piazza-del-duomo-lecce-vhfc).

It is the main street of the historical center in Lecce. Alongside there are many shops, cafes and restaurants which invite the visitors to linger and browse. The street is busiest when locals gather for a “pre-dinner-walk” (passeggiata serale) and stroll through the golden sandstone street with their families and friends.
