Monopoli – Apulia’s hidden gem

 Monopoli is a small city on the Adriatic side of Apulia; it is specifically located in the "heel of Italy’s boot". The odd name itself makes you curious to learn about and visit that town, right? Nonetheless, Monopoli is usually not on "the must-see list" of the majority of Apulia’s visitors. The reason why could be that it doesn’t have one particular thing to be famous for, such as the baroque architecture in Le[cce](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/lecce-experience-the-city-s-unique-charm-z0vb) and the trulli houses in Al[berobello](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/alberobello-the-trulliland-20dm). Being kept as a secret from the mass tourism, Monopoli is a wonderful, authentic Italian town with a picturesque sea front promenade.  The historical city center has well preserved its genuine charm and local characteristics. There are countless cafes, restaurants and bars in Monopoli and they are all great value for money. One of my favorite places there, is the Vini & Panini, located on the main square, in the pedestrian zone. The little restaurant is completely surrounded by grapevines during the warm months and offers fresh and super tasty panini, bruschette, ma[in dishes](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/apulian-cuisine-ihzk) and l[ocal wines](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/drinking-wine-in-apulia-x8e4). 

After enjoying a tasty meal, you should definitely continue your exploration at the historical port of Monopoli. The harbor is connected to the historical center, through a big open window,  which is the perfect place for a "photo stop".  It's also an ideal place to start your stroll from, towards the port and the sea promenade. There are many bars, where you can enjoy the wonderful sea view. If you continue walking from the port, you will arrive at a big, free and accessible lookout point (Bastione Santa Maria), that used to be the historic defense wall of the city.

 Monopoli has even got a city beach. The sand section is quite narrow, but the water is very clear -besides, keep in mind that in August it never gets too crowded!

For this hideaway city tucked inside the depths of Apulia, the accommodations available are similar in its secret vibrancy too.
