Monuments worth seeing in Yerevan

According to the data of the municipality of Yerevan, there are more than 400 historical and cultural monuments in the city. Of course, it will take a lot of time to explore all of them. However, among those, many things are worth seeing. Therefore I will talk about a couple of monuments that are very famous and mean a lot to Armenians. The statues hold some kind of uniting power as they symbolize the collective memories and values of the people, especially when those are dedicated to national heroes or famous persons liked by everybody in the country. 

The Statue of David of Sassoun

Armenia has a national epic called Daredevils of Sassoun (Sasna Tsrer) that is a poem that expresses the essence or spirit of Armenia as a nation. It was created in the 8th century but was published only in 1837. The main hero of the poem is David of Sassoun (Sasountsi Davit), whose statue is considered to be the most beloved one among Armenians. Here, everybody knows his name, and many people name their kids Davit after him. The statue was made by a famous Armenian sculptor Yervand Khochar back in 1559.

Mother Armenia statue

One of the hugest and the most known statues of Armenia is located near Victory Park and is seen from the city centre of Yerevan. This statue that is a personification of Armenia is called Mother Armenia. She holds a big sword in her hands and proudly follows the city life from above. The sculptor was Ara Harutyunyan and the architect Rafayel Irayelian. The pedestal is 29 meters high, and the height of the statue is 22 meters (in total 51 m.) Right under the statue, in the pedestal, is placed a Military Museum of the Ministry of Defense, so while taking photos by the statue do not also forget to have a look at the pieces presented at the museum. 

Alexsander Tamanyan’s statue

Another well-known monument that became an integral part of the city of Yerevan is Alexsander Tamanyan’s statue. He was the main architect of Yerevan. The streets are designed the way that from above the whole city looks round, like the sun. That’s why the locals like to call Yerevan the city of the Sun. Tamanyan’s statue is located right in front of the Cascade. He also designed several buildings in Armenia that became much liked by everyone, such as the Opera and Ballet house, the Republic Square, which is the heart of the capital city and many more.

In general, there are many other monuments in Yerevan that is also worth seeing. But if your time in Armenia is limited, at least try to visit the once I have mentioned in this article.
