Forget about all the cites and islands you saw before. Put your anchor down in the sea and sail in the quiet waters of the Pula bay. Get ready to wander in time and ask yourself which century is right now because Pula with its Roman spirit will trick you. This will be your favorite "Roman" town ever.
Pula is located on the southwestern tip of the Istrian peninsula, and it is the biggest Istrian city. It is also the place with 2300 hours of sunshine per year and the city outside Italy with the most-preserved Roman architectural wonders.
The symbol of the city and maybe the most photographed building in whole Croatia - Arena in Pula hockey is the most beautiful concert venue as well. It's impossible to start listing up who performed in the Arena in Pula. The biggest names of world music had a concert in Arena. The most influential bands gathered more than 20 000 people, film projections, football & ice hockey matches ... all that Arena accepted within its walls. Arena in Pula is the only Roman amphitheater in the world with preserved all columns around. 2000 years old, it steals the show but besides Arena, Pula** **is home of the Temple of Augustus, Arch of Sergius, mosaic floors, etc.
The Augustan Forum, the Gate of Hercules, the Twin Gates, Arch of the Sergii and Temple of Augustus are all 2000 years old. The best thing about Pula is that all those Roman structures are outside on a display, so everybody can see them. Visiting these monuments is highly recommended in the early morning - the sun is behind you, and there are not too many people on the street.
Famous Irish writer James Joyce spent the fourth year of the 20th century in Pula. After leaving Ireland in the middle of publishing his book and problems in his homeland, Joyce decided to move to Pula. Today, you can see Mr. Joyce sitting on a chair in front of a table. There is a memorial board dedicated to him.
While you are in Pula,* don't miss to go and visit Brijuni and see how safari in the middle of Europe looks like. Pula is lovely, Pula is stunning, Pula **is old but modern, blue and green, kind and quiet but also fast and vibrant. Without any doubt, come to Istria, treat yourself with some Italian food, add Croatian pastry, take a glass of Malvazija *wine and enjoy Pula and its Roman spirit.
