It was in the 15th century that Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Albrecht Dürer were making their masterpieces. The most significant paintings were made and marvelous buildings rose up across Europe. It was the period of Renaissance when the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) got its important southeastern fortress - Revelin. Today, this fortress-theater in Dubrovnik is a venue for theater shows, concerts and even gala dinners. Together with Lovrijenac fortress, Revelin is one of the most significant forts outside the city walls.
Fortress Revelin was built in the 15th and the 16th century. It has a specific position, and together with Lovrijenac fortress, it creates diagonal protection. It served as a protection fortress during the Turkish and Venetian attacks, since the Dubrovnik state was independent for more than five centuries. This fortification has a brilliant position since it's surrounded with the moat and the sea. Today, the moat is dry, but the sea is still there, of course. Thanks to its structure (beautiful white stones and moat around), it does look like a castle from cartoons or movies we watched as kids. During the Dubrovnik state's greatest power, the fort was there to protect it, but lately (after a huge earthquake in the 17th century), it was also home to all valuable things from the Dubrovnik Cathedral, and it served as a seat of the Free State of Ragusa. Alongside Minčeta tower and Fort Lovrijenac, this one of one of my favorite stops during every visit to this splendid city.
This important monument and symbol of the past centuries today serves as a theater, an exhibition area, a party venue or even a dining place. Since the Dubrovnik Summer Festival is the most important event in the cultural life of the city, since its creation (1950), the fort Revelin became its synonym. During the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, the renaissance and baroque spirits awake, and whole city breaths in the rhythm of this era.
Besides festival days, the fort Revelin hosts as well a discotheque in Dubrovnik, opened in 2010. Some of the world's famous DJs performed in this unique nightclub. Rock and roll, techno music, modern pop music, all sorts of nightclub events take place within those walls, built hundreds of years ago. Revelin, a fortress-theater in Dubrovnik, is the venue of a summer festival, historical monument, party place, exhibition space and, above all, your first photo object when visiting this amazing city.
