Savica Waterfall – a beautiful love story

When travelling, who doesn’t love to hear a beautiful and interesting story about a sight you are seeing or a place you are visiting. Even if sometimes these stories are just pure fiction, that doesn’t make them any less inspiring and fun to hear.

The same goes for one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia – Savica Waterfall, which flows into Lake Bohinj - another sight you wouldn’t want to miss when you are visiting this place.

The magnificent Savica Waterfall was one of the inspirations behind a long poem written by the greatest Slovenian poet – France Prešeren. The poem is called The Baptism on the Savica and tells a story of a young hero named Črtomir and his love for Bogomila, a beautiful young woman he is in love with. They sadly cannot be together because they come from the different religions. Despite that, the young man’s** love is so strong that he converts to the Christianity for her and gets baptized at the Savica Waterfall**.

If you are travelling to Ljubljana, the green capital of Slovenia, you can also see a scene from this poem portrayed on the author’s statue at Prešeren Square.

There are many different places where you can start your journey to the Savica Waterfall. One of them is the Savica hut (Koča pri Savici), where you can leave your car and take a 30-minute-long walk up a forested slope to the waterfall. This is probably the easiest and most common way to get there. You can also take a long walk along the marked trail from an old building of now-closed Zlatorog Hotel, or even ride a bicycle along the asphalt road. There is a small fee to pay for visiting the waterfall.

When you arrive at your destination, there is a small wooden viewing cabin waiting for you at the top. From there, you can observe the beautiful mountains and Lake Bohinj in the distance and of course, get closer to the Savica Waterfall and enjoy the view of the crystal blue water and magnificent waterfall itself. You can walk down the stairs and get very close to the waterfall, where you can feel the cold water on your skin, which can be very refreshing, especially on hot summer days.

Visiting the Savica Waterfall is an incredible experience that won’t leave you disappointed and one you most definitely won’t forget. And it doesn’t matter if you are coming for the love story or solely to enjoy the beautiful nature and the feeling of a breeze the water will leave on your face.
