The Valencian Community offers its people a wide range of sights, natural parks, stunning beaches, amazing food and temperatures that make this community one of the most visited in Spain throughout the year. Valencia and Alicante are the most popular cities, but it’s time for you to know about another historical city located in the province of Alicante: Denia.

Denia is a coastal city on the Costa Blanca, halfway between Alicante and Valencia. I mentioned before that it is a historical city because of the fact that Iberian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, and Christian civilizations have left their legacy and mark on this city, leaving an immense historical heritage too. As a result, the Moorish castle of Denia is considered to be one of the most famous sights in a city full of history, which also served as a key fortress when pirates were robbing and sailing the Mediterranean Sea and its towns. The Port of Denia has also been a key element for the city and its citizens, and there are ferries that take you to the famous island of Ibiza, if you wish.

Denia's castle and archeological museum

The castle is located at the highest point of the city, offering views over the sea, the city and the beautiful surrounding area of the Montgó Natural Park. The castle was built during the 11th and 12th centuries but this castle also holds an archaeological museum inside – the museum is located in the two buildings known as Governor’s Palace (Palacio del Governador in Spanish.) To get to the castle, you have to go for a very interesting, enjoyable walk around the oldest part of Denia and then go upstairs. If you’re lucky with the weather and there is a clear sky, which is very likely, you can spot Ibiza Island from the top of the castle.

Montgó Mountain and Natural Park

The Montgó Mountain and Natural Park constitutes another of the most touristic attractions for those who visit Denia, and it is very easily accessible and close to this city. This natural park rises 750m above the sea and shelters more than 600 vegetable species such as rosemary and lavender, and many birds, reptiles, and mammals, such as foxes and rabbits. There are also plenty of hiking routes that you can do around the Natural Park of Montgó, which have different difficulty levels. On a clear day, Ibiza can be seen so go and spend a beautiful day in this old rocky mountain and enjoy nature!

As you can see, the Valencian Community is full of beauty, beaches, and culture, and so it is in this case. I fully recommend people to visit the city of Denia!
