When you think of Makarska first association is sea, great domestic food, and wine. But Makarska is so much more than that! Sightseeing around Makarska as well as the city itself will make you fall in love with this southern region of Croatia.
Makarska is a city that belongs to Split-Dalmatian County. It is located south from Split, 90 km away (via E65 highway), and 150 km from Dubrovnik, via road D8.
If you start from the city center you should start from main church square. Walking through narrow streets, soon you will find yourself at Kačić square. You will take fabulous pictures of St. Mark's church with Bikovo mountain in the background. As the very best protector of the city, this mountain also represents one of the biggest national parks in Croatia. Don’t miss to come back at night also! Sit in some of the local bars, or just relax on the stairs leading to the church above the square and take a deep breath! Yes, this is magical, and no, you are not dreaming!
If you like hiking, south from town you can walk through Osejava park and reach next settlement, Tučepi with very popular beach, Slatina. Be careful, though, if you want to get down to the beaches along the way, because there are some slippery rocks.
North from Makarska, you will reach The Sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes called Vepric. It is made on slopes of Bikovo, in rocks and has beautiful little square and park. A quiet and peaceful place where you can feel a very strong connection with surroundings.
Peninsula of St. Peter is one of the must-see places in Makarska. Walking by the sea you will see Hvar, Paklinski otoci, and Brač on the horizon during the day and beautiful view on Makarska during the sunset. Also, few small beaches are waiting for you here, hidden from everybody’s eyes. And, this is not all of it. Come and find your own piece of greatness in Makarska!
