I have already taken you to Split in my story about the Game of Thrones filming locations. Now, I want to guide you through the history of Split, its monuments and all the places that make this city one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia. Its turbulent history, architecture, mountains behind and the sea in front of it, make this city so specific and worth visiting.
We can start with Diocletian’s Palace. It is built in the 4th century, although it seems that the town dates back to the 2nd or 3rd century. This amazing building lies in the very center of the Old Town and is remarkably preserved, so, let the imagination leads you to the time of Romans, their emperors and all the luxury of that time. And if you are here in the beginning of September, you can feel like a real Roman, as the Days of Diocletian’s are held at that time.
Also, you have to climb on the bell-tower of the St. Domnius Catedral for one cup of an amazing view of the city and the sea. This cathedral is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world. It was built in the 7th century.
When you walk down from the palace, you will arrive in the middle of the Old Town of Split. To be in the heart of Split, you have to go to People’s square (Croatian: Narodni Trg). Here, you can see how all those centuries passed by, beautiful old buildings, narrow streets and small squares. The palace and the Old Town became part** of the UNESCO World Heritage in 2014**.
Have a coffee or a glass of wine and continue your tour. Now you have a few choices depending on whether you want to continue walking down the path of ancient history or you would like a little hiking to the Marjan Hill, or perhaps you would prefer a tour to the nearby islands - Hvar, Biševo, Vis or Paklinski otoci.
Oh, history first? OK, now we have to go a few kilometers on the northeast of the city to see Klis, an old fortress. The perfect panorama is waiting for you when you get up there. But, I bet you will find more than one. Klis was a home of some Croatian kings and important point on the medieval map of Europe. After Klis, we can go back towards the city again. The hitchhiking is our next choice, so that we can go straight to the Marjan peninsula. Take a break and become "one" with nature. Enjoy the paths through the green pine trees with a magnificent view to the sea.
And at the end, I will give you a night off to stroll the Riva promenade, and I’m waiting for you for a tomorrow's trip to the famous caves, the green and the blue ones, and all above-mentioned islands. Come to Split, one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia and get ready to be stunned!
