Strolls and festivals in Alicante

Spanish cities are very well thought through and designed for their people to spend time walking around and hanging out in outdoors spaces, so they can make the most of the nice weather and enjoy the beauty of the architecture. And in my opinion, the city of Alicante shows this perfectly well!

If you get the chance to visit Alicante, you can’t miss taking a stroll down the esplanade, a maritime promenade which runs parallel to the Port and finishes in Canalejas Park. It is made of more than six millions marble tiles that create a wavy mosaic with red, black and white colours. It has 4 lines of palm trees which run for more than 500 metres and that make it look like a film set with views to the sea.

You can find plenty of souvenirs, market stalls with local products and restaurants to enjoy some Spanish food and sit and watch the world go by, or to see the sunsets or feel the sea on your skin. You can also find local people going for a run in the evening and it is a very well preserved, clean place. I fully recommend getting a gelato cone, take in the local sights and look down at this original paved walkaway!

Bonfires in el Postiguet

Postiguet Beach is an icon for the local people of Alicante, located in the urban area at the foot of Santa Barbara Castle. Like many beaches in the province of Alicante, it has golden sand, calm and blue water and a nice beach walk with never-ending views. It is also the place where the most important festival in Alicante is celebrated, the Bonfires of Saint John, which takes place on the evening of the 23rd of June. 

Bonfires are quite normal in many Spanish towns and cities but the largest one takes place in Alicante, and it is without doubt, one of the most magical nights, full of traditions, rituals and fires to celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice. Young people gather together and create large bonfires from any kind of wood and share drinks while they jump over the fires to ensure protection for the rest of the year – the combination of drinks and fire may sound a bit scary but don’t worry, because the celebration is legalized and there are policeman and fire-fighters around. A group of firework displays takes place on this beach too and many people go to enjoy the colours, the light, and the sounds.
