It as been a while since I wrote about Lisbon, and for this article I followed my sweet tooth and, with the help of my girlfriend, made a list of all the places we enjoy in Lisbon for some sweet afternoon snacks! Of course there are many more to choose from, but this is a list of personal tastes, which I hope expand on the future, but as it is now I hope you find something to enjoy!

*(due to my work and routine, I cannot manage to cover all of Lisbon, so some locations are repeated due to it being more practical for me)*

I divided my list by categories, because, depending on what you prefer or even the time of year, maybe a cake is more alluring than ice cream, or maybe a local pastry is more of your interest?

I myself prefer a slice of cake on the colder months, and my two main places for a good and sweet snack is Bolo da Marta and Landeau, with wildly different types of cake. Both these pastries have shops on LX Factory, near my house in Alcântara, but you can find them around other places like Chiado and São Sebastião. And if i’m talking about cakes then I should also mention TEASE, a cupcake shop with the most creative sweets I’ve seen! My girlfriend’s personal favorite.

O Bolo da Marta is a pastry shop focused on creating pie-like pavlovas. Their classic ones are filled with bits of chocolate and fruit, being very sweet.  It is located at the first floor in the bookshop Ler Devagar, in LX Factory. During Summer you can find them at LX Factory , outside the bookshop in a van to enjoy the good weather. You can also buy some slices on El Corte Inglês in São Sebastião.

O Bolo da Marta

Landeau is considered by many to be the best chocolate cake in Portugal, and because of that it is the only thing they sell in their shops. It is very smooth and soft, almost the middle term between a cake and a chocolate mousse. You can find these cakes at LX Factory, Chiado and El Corte Inglês.

Landeau

Located between Santos and Cais do Sodre, TEASE is a small bakery where you can find pretty decorated cupcakes and other kind of cakes. It also has not so sweet things on it’s menu, like salads, sandwiches and drinks. It's very sought after for it's sweet snacks.

For ice cream it was difficult, the discussion on the best ice cream place in Lisbon is a though on, but I went with my gut and chose Nannarella, a small ice cream place in Santos but with the best handmade ice cream I know. I am an ice cream fanatic so believe me: it’s good! Two other places I would like to mention, out of sheer curiosity, is Something N’Ice and Pop Cereal Café, where can eat ice cream with cookies or cereal.

Pastries are important as a symbol of a country, and even though I really enjoy the eclairs at L’Éclair, I have to mention two pastry shops with more typical Portuguese sweets: Alcôa and Manteigaria. One is specialized in egg based sweets but has a lot to offer, the other is more dedicated to one single pastry, the Pastel de Nata, one of Portugal’s most famous snacks. Belém is known to have the best, and I won’t argue that, but the lines are endless and Manteigaria has many shops in Lisbon that sell really good Pasteis de Nata.

For sweets with a portuguese flavor, Alcôa is a pastry who focuses on delicate sweets made with sweet egg custard who have won quite a few prizes. It was founded in 1957 and its tradition comes from the monks of Alcobaça. You can find them in Chiado and El Corte Inglês.

If you want to avoid the big queues for Pastéis de Belém, you can find some good pastéis de nata in the tiny shop in Chiado called Manteigaria , the only focus of the bakery is to sell them and some coffee.  They ring a bell when a new batch has been made so you can buy them when they are warm. You can also find them in Mercado da Ribeira.

I am André Jesus, from Portugal. I grew up in the south, in a small city called Faro, the capital of the region of Algarve. I grew up loving to stroll and imagining fantasy worlds based on what I saw. I’ve since grown but didn’t lose my geek side, and that’s why I moved to the big city of Lisbon and studied Animation in the Fine Arts University.
