“Paris is always a good idea,” Audrey Hepburn once said - and that rings true for the city’s fantastical and whimsy hotels too.
It’s a city that means a lot of different things to different people - some call it the city of lights, for others the city of love, and for myself; a city that I always time and time return to. The streets from Saint-Germain-des-Près to Canal Saint-Martin are familiar yet always still leave a mystery for any traveller who comes to each visit. Staying at the right hotel adds to this sense of wonder and exploration around Paris. That’s why we’ve asked our on-the-ground Live the World editors; some expats and some Parisian locals; which hotels are quirky, unique, and filled with just as much wonder as the city streets themselves for a lovely stay.
Also whether this is your first time in Paris or you’ve been in this city countless times now, be sure to check out some of these top activities in the city:
I’ve stayed at the Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal for multiple occasions - romantic getaways (the engraved bathrobes and room service on your suite’s private terrace add to the swoon-worthiness), for holidays with friends (we’ve done quite a few champagne toasting in here) and vacation with family (we love walking, and the location is within walking distance to the best of Paris). There’s an elegant charm to this hotel and one can easily feel it from the facade and walking up the inner stairwell (where vintage travel trunks are stacked like sculptures). Bonus, Netflix’s Emily in Paris (see our itinerary for your own Emily walk here!) is filmed right in front of the hotel. It’s the square where Emily’s office is located!

Are you a Netflix and chill type of person? No literally, get some macarons, curl up under the blankets and put on your favourite flick - because if that’s what you love for a cosy night in, then Hotel Paradiso is the perfect abode for it. Why you may ask? The hotel suites don’t come with just any regular ol’ flat screen TV, but a whole wall cover projector and cinema screen. Basically, at this hotel, you’ll have your own private movie theatre in your own suite.

Now this is a truly quirky hotel in Paris - just floating in a renovated catamaran from the Seine itself is Hotel OFF Paris Seine. The owners decked this ship out with a plunge pool and a marina, where guests can leisurely watch life in Paris go by in style. To add to the summer fiesta vibes, there is a jazz and pop funk theme parties that are hosted 3 days a week from the hotel - so no matter what you’re feeling for, there’s always something fun going on at this boat hotel.

Paris is never short of sweeping views at this hotel is no less missing in action from that caveat as it overlooks the historical Gare du Nord Train Station. If your room has a balcony, enjoy how romantic the train station is lit up in the evening. The rooms itself are amongst Paris chicest - with gold light fixtures and funky wallpapers that matches the colourful patterns that can be found on the bedsheets. 25hours Hotel Terminus Nord gives its guest an intimate connection to a Paris that can often feel hidden away from any regular tourist.

Where art meets the classic theme of the Seven Deadly sins - a walk through the Vice Versa Hotel feels like you’re going through a modern exhibition. Like Alice in Wonderland, some rooms you’ll feel like you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole in the most visually appealing way thanks to designer Chantal Thomass. Each suite are designed with their own unique colours and materials, so whenever you check in, you’ll always get a different vibe, a different cool experience. My favourite is the oh-so adorable Marie Antoinette sweets suite, where motif of pastries like cupcakes and the late queen herself adorns the pink room.

Hidden away behind a Parisian bakery, this is one of my favourite hotels in Paris - and I find to always be amused and inspired by a stay at the Hôtel du Petit Moulin. Dripping in opulence yet refined appreciation, this spotlessly clean hotel serves a faultless service on top of a quirky hotel stay in Paris. Legendary French fashion designer Christian Lacroix designed this hotel, being playful as well as tapping into his regal tastes. You simply won’t even know that this is a luxury hotel from the street - since you’ll first admire the speakeasy facade of the boulangerie.

I always treasure a stay at the InterContinental Paris Le Grand, an IHG Hotel - since it never cease to make me feel like I’ve been whisked away in some type of old storybook tale of Paris’ golden days. It’s like a palace smacked in the middle of historical Paris, with a grand lobby, a grand ballroom (where I’ve asked the concierge to give me a free tour of! And any guest can request it too) as well as rooms that have open Parisian balconies that make you feel like a main character in a French movie.

Feel the 80s rock and roll vibes with a sleek glamour of the swinging Prohibition era at the ReMIX Hotel, located in Paris’ La Villette district. This hotel makes it a hotspot for any type of traveller - whether you’re on business, making the most of its co-working space, or on holiday with its plush dimly lit suites. The hotel is also located right off of the metro station so no matter where you’re heading out in the city, you’ll be well connected to this quirky hotel. Channeling a quirky hotel with the spirit of Parisian funk, Hotel Les Deux Gares is makes for any Instagrammable stay. Designed by the renowned designer, Luke Edward Hall, there’s an old world feeling that preemates the hallways of the hotel - from the suites down to the bygone era decor. The in house cafe serves traditional French cuisine with authentic bistro vibes - so you can feel like you’ve travelled back in time to the Paris of Hemmingway and artists.

While this hotspot is located in an incredible location (steps from the Arc de Triomphe, no big deal right?) there’s a reason why it’s called the Hidden Hotel. Those in the know where it is, but the exterior is subtle, easy to miss and for a reason - to give you a truly intimate experience within the heart beat of what makes Paris so special. The rooms feel cosy with its masculine colour undertones, of wood and slabs of grey - adding to the sensual vibes that the hotel evokes.

Make no mistake that even though this hotel may be small in size, it’s impactful in how it takes each guest on a journey to a true vibe of what it’s like to be Parisian. The Champs-Élysées is within walking distance to the hotel, so you won’t have to worry about getting around the city. The interior of Hôtel La Canopée itself crosses between a zenful tropical design (deep lush greens and plant motif) with a cosy fireplace opening up to a hidden garden terrace that’s rare to find in this area of Paris.

Ah, even just saying the name Serotel Lutèce is a charming rhythm on one’s tongue. Which is accurate, because charm is what the hotel is all about - from the way the staff attentively helps you out with any whim, to the playful interior design. Motif of books and old-world library are visually designed throughout the hotel from the lounge to some of the suites. There’s a gilded feeling about this hotel, that’s perfectly peaceful for a relaxing stay.

A fusion of an upscale market, luxury baths, contemporary dance hall and an exquisitely fine hotel wrapped into one spot - the Chouchou Hôtel knows how to be an it-spot for Parisians and travellers alike. The rooms have an artistic wink with splendrous cornices and cosy furnishings.
