Famous as the city of the “thousand tastes and cultures”, Madrid is one of the most open cities on earth where it doesn’t matter where you’re from for the oft-heard phrase to ring true: ‘If you’re in Madrid, you’re from Madrid’. Madrid nights are the stuff of legend, and the perfect complement to the more sedate charms of fine arts and fine dining.

If you're a fan of arts, you’ve definitely come to the right place. Madrid is literally bursting with museums and galleries that will take your breath away. From Spain's most important collection of paintings in the Prado to the top spot for contemporary art par excellence that is the Reina Sofia, the Spanish capital is home to many of the greatest pieces of art by the most important artists in history.

If you’re planning an alternative visit to the spanish capital, I’m here to help you sort your museum itinerary. What museums shouldn’t be missing from your agenda and why?!

Reina Sofia

The Reina Sofia museum is no doubt Spain's national museum of 20th-century art. Inaugurated in 1992, it is considered one of the most important museums in Spain. Located close to the train station of Atocha, the museum is dedicated to the Spanish art and it includes excellent pieces of art! Paintings of Picasso and Dali can be found in it, while its artistic landmark is the famous painting of Picasso, Guernica, that can be admired on the second floor!

Prado

Considered as one of the most important museums in the whole world, Prado is probably the most visited museum in Spain. Located only five minutes away from Reina Sofia, Prado features one of the world’s finest collections of European art. Founded as a museum of paintings and sculpture in 1819, it also contains important collections of other types of works. While in Spain, a visit to Prado is definitely a must-do.

Thyssen

The Thyssen-Bornemisza museum, or simply known as the Thyssen, is also an art museum located right across Prado. With over 1,600 paintings, the private collection of the late Baron Hans-Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza is widely considered as one of the largest private collections in the world. With terracotta-pink walls, marble floors and skylights, visitors can view the works with near-perfect illumination, fact that definitely impresses even the most demanding critics of art!

As mentioned above, the three museums, Reina Sofia, Prado and Thyssen, located almost next to each other, have formed the famous "Golden Triangle of Art", which impresses every visitor.
