Established in 1830, the Museo Correr showcases the collection of a 19th-century Venetian abbot and art collector called Teodoro Correr. It is an ideal place to learn about the art and history of the Republic of Venice. Highlights in the museum include works by the famed Neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822).

As soon as I entered the first room of the museum, I found myself alone in an elegant and classic ballroom, which seemed like it had never been changed. Apart from the ostentatious interior design, the 19th-century elaborate glass chandeliers add a special touch to the palace. Glass was such a classy and timeless material that was characteristic of Venice (If you are also interested in glassware like me, why don't you visit the Glass Museum in Murano?).

In fact, the entrance to Museo Correr is also the entrance of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (The National Museum of Archaeology) and the beautiful Renaissance library called Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. The main room of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana is full of masterpieces by Renaissance artists. Historical maps, coins, archeological artifacts, art, ancient books, and many other special things are on display at the museums. Thus, it takes at least 2 to 3 hours to examine everything closely at the museums.

Before leaving the museums, I enjoyed an incredible view of the Saint Mark's Square and Basilica. It was entertaining watching people from the windows of the museum, and I could even slightly hear the live music from the cafés. It was the first time that I could fully admire the beautiful architectural details of Saint Mark's Basilica without the crowds during the day.

Insider's tips

If you stay in Venice for a week or more, definitely buy a Venice Museum pass to visit the 11 Civic Museums of Venice. It costs 24 euros (18 euros for students under 26) and is valid for 6 months. Included in the pass are the best public museums in Venice such as the Doge's Palace and the Museo Correr.
