National Treasure of Belgrade

Continuing our journey through the path of art, let's get more familiar with the Belgrade theatre scene. We have stopped to learn more about a unique, traditional Yugoslav theatre as well as about a bit alternative Bitef theatre. The place I am taking you today is one of the oldest and by far the most significant cultural institutions in Belgrade, Serbia. Allow me to introduce you to the National Theatre (Narodno Pozoriste) of Belgrade.

The National Theater of Belgrade is located at the Republic Square, close to Knez Mihailova street, at the very center of the city. The astounding building will definitely catch your eye and make you wonder the story it tells. Its façade is beautifully decorated and renovated, yet preserving the vibe of the early 20th century that will certainly grab your attention.

If you are not that big fan of a theatre stage (how can you?!), then I have some great news for you! The National Theatre of Belgrade offers an extreme variety of ballet and opera performances, since its very opening in far 1868. Since that moment of great historical importance, it has been the epitome of the finest Serbian culture and tradition. Today, the theatre offers opera, drama and ballet productions on two auditoriums known as the Main stage seating 700, and Rasa Plaovic stage seating 300 spectators. But not only that! The theatre building offers an extraordinarily beautiful and antique museum as well as an old-school cafeteria.

I always happily recall the vist to the National Theatre during my high school days. On one particular night I always gladly remember, I was so excited to see the long awaited play called “The Importance of Being Ernest” by one of my favorite authors Oscar Wilde. Those several hours in the theatre meant the world to me, as I got completely involved into the whole story. But the atmosphere and the vibe that the National Theatre offers, brings the whole experience to a whole new level. It really makes you feel as if you travelled back to the mid-20th century, when going to the theatre meant something very special. The building, stage, actors and the overall ambiance really preserved that old school spirit of elegant theatre that used to be the main entertainment for people. So I let my imagination lead me and always indulge fully in that experience. The National Theatre of Belgrade means culture, elegance and sophisticated art for me. I invite you to see it for yourself and share your impressions.
