Summer has ended, and we will soon be surrounded by the beautiful colours of autumn. This time of the year holds a very special place in the hearts of Slovenian people, as it is the season of the grape harvest and wine-making. The viticulture is spread in different regions all over the country and has a long tradition that people have transferred from one generation to another. With Maribor being home to the oldest vine in the world, people feel even more enthusiastic and proud of the delicious Slovenian wines and the process of making them.

The grape harvest, also known as "trgatev" in Slovene, typically takes places in September and October. That is when people invite their families, friends and neighbours to their vineyard to help them with the chore. People of all ages are invited, and they usually spend the whole day picking grapes by their hand whilst talking, joking and even singing. When the harvest is over, a picnic or a small feast takes place with delicious food and drinks for the helpers. Everyone is celebrating and rejoicing until the late evening.

Many delicious award-winning wines being produced in Slovenia come from the hands of experts and family companies with a long history and experience. You can pay a visit to one of the many tourist farms and wine cellars to have a taste of their quality wines or take a peaceful walk around the green vineyards surrounding you. The best way to get to know more about the history and the making of Slovenian wines is from the dedicated winemakers, who feel nothing but love and commitment for their profession.
The most known grape harvest in Slovenia occurs when the grape on the oldest vine in the world, called Stara trta is being picked. There is also a festival dedicated to this national treasure, which takes place around the time of the harvest in Lent, Maribor.

Later in November, for the feast of Saint Martin, another important celebration for Slovenians regarding the wine takes place. This event is also known as martinovanje, where the feasts and celebrations, including traditional food and customs, are being thrown around the homes of Slovenians. People are celebrating the Saint Martin’s name day and the day when the must, or young wine, traditionally turns to wine. And if that is not a reason for celebration, then I don’t know what is.
