In every city that we visit, some squares, parks or streets just stick in our memory. And some don't. Maybe Ilica Street in Zagreb has that special magical charm, but Tkalčićeva will bring you the unerasable memories from this city. While Ilica Street can be seen on foot by visiting museums, shops and parks, in Tkalčićeva street, you will spend most of the time in the bars. Sounds boring? Well, let me show you that it is not. Welcome to the most vibrant street in Zagreb - Tkalčićeva.

The name and history

Named after a famous Croatian historian and priest - Ivan Krstitelj Tkalčić, this street has a long and very entertaining history. Previously, the street was named Potok ulica (Stream street), since a stream was flowing at the exact place where the street is now located. Water from the stream (Medveščak stream) was coming from Medvednica mountain and was ending in the Manduševac fountain, a famous fountain on Ban Jelačić Square. Still, when looking from above, Tkalčićeva Street with its curvy shape looks like an actual stream. So, the stream was covered and still, some water is flowing beneath the street  - don't forget that while drinking your first coffee in Zagreb. Another curiosity: in the begging of the 20th century, until the Second World War, this was famous brothel street. Today, Tkalčićeva is famous for its bars, fun, energy, and vibrancy during the day and night.

Tkalčićeva Street today

When you are on** Ban Jelačić Square, you will see where Tkalčićeva Street is, since the majority of the people will head there. (You can only mix it with Ilica, since this is another top destination to head to from the main square). Tkalčićeva Street will bring you to the Uptown and Kaptol, but before we climb up there - let's firstly have a cup of coffee. In this street, one of the best places to have a mug of craft beer is located. We are talking about Pivnica Mali Medo (Little Bear pub), a place where you can bring all your friends, and meet new people if coming alone. Great beer is guaranteed here. You can spend one whole day in Tkalčićeva Street** just wandering from bar to bar or on the way to buy souvenirs. If you are that type of traveler, that's a perfect place for you.

Additionally, this street is home to a statue of Marija Jurić Zagorka, a Croatian writer, feminist, and journalist. And just right behind it, you will see a very old and interesting sundial

Day or night?

I would say - both. Tkalčićeva is the most vibrant street in Zagreb. It's alive and vibrant 24/7. Its energy will fascinate you, and the street is perfectly positioned so that you can make your coffee/beer/food break at any time.
