Toro Toro, the land of dinosaurs, caves and adventure

Huge dinosaurs used to walk along the fields of Toro Toro National Park, millions of years ago. Thanks to tectonic movements in the area, thousands of fossils ended up on the surface, creating a bridge between them and us. These same tectonic movements have created capricious formations, tunnels, and caves in Toro Toro. This national park, being far away from any big city, holds lots of surprises for its visitors.

The main square of the small village inside Toro Toro National Park is decorated with dinosaur figures, to introduce visitors to the next adventure. Near the village, one can observe some of the dinosaur footprints of the park: long paths of footprints of herbivore and carnivore dinosaurs that survived millions of years, tell us about the ones that used to inhabit our earth before us. And then the adventure starts.

Toro Toro has the deepest and longest caves of Bolivia. More than 50 of them have been discovered in the park. Some of these caves run for kilometers underground. Umajalanta Cave is the most popular one to visit. Eight kilometers of it have been explored. Inside, its chambers and tunnels are waiting for the adventurers.

If you have visited other caves, this one will not be one more of them. Forget the touristy ones with lights of colors, where you just go in to take a picture and leave. Put on your non-slippery shoes and your caving equipment, and get ready to go a hundred meters underground!

A guide will lead you along the cave. Starting the journey, you will see the unique stalactite and stalagmite formations. At some point, you will turn off your lights to feel the deepest darkness and silence underground. Soon you will find the blind fish who live in the cave's waters. You will have to climb, rappel and crawl, tunnel after tunnel and chamber after chamber, on a real caving adventure, to discover what is in there.

But the adventure of Toro Toro does not end underground. Millions of years ago, nature did its most capriccios wills, leaving quirky formations in the park.

In Ciudad de Itas, the rock formations are impressive. Among them is the Itas Cathedral, where enormous rock walls of 50 to 270 meters form doors and chambers, making it resemble a cathedral or palace built by nature.

In another point of the park, it is possible to walk along with a viewpoint that leaves us right in the middle of Toro Toro Canyon, which has a depth ranging from 200 to 400 meters.

If you dare to go further, a trail of rocky terrain after the Toro Toro Canyon will lead you to El Vergel. Over there, beautiful waterfalls surrounded by green nature appear as a little oasis surrounded by desertic terrain.
