When in Greece, the island of Santorini is probably the first one to pop into your head when thinking about Greek wine. But there is much more than that. The Greek islands’ wine is said to be the tastiest, so let me introduce you to the magnificent, Samian Wine. Prepare for a modern and aesthetically pleasing gastronomic trip to Samos Wine Museum and uncover the secrets of traditional winemaking. Whatever your taste buds desire, try out and enjoy everything, from traditional to contemporary wines and find out about the history of wine production in the region.
The majestic stone edifice that serves as home to the museum dates back to the 19th century, and one could say that it is an exhibit itself. It was initially used as a private winery and then converted into a warehouse and a barrel-making facility in the subsequent years. The renovation of the space began in around 2000, and the museum was inaugurated in 2005.
The arrangement of the exhibits, which seeks its roots in contemporary museum science, transports the visitor to the traditional vineyard farming of Samos Island. Additionally, the artefacts on display provide an in-depth account of the social, cultural, and historical development of winemaking in Samos.
Since it was converted into a museum in 2005, it has been used to exhibit artefacts significant to the evolution of the Samos wine. These include vintage photographs and production records, depictions of vineyards, manual labour and harvesting presses, cellars, collectable bottles, tools for making barrels, antique winemaking machinery, and of course, a number of awards and distinctions.
Objects used in the production of traditional wine, such as tools, tanks, and laboratory instruments, date back more than a century. The representation of the vines' cultivation in dry-stone terraces is of great interest to the visitor. Moreover, the enormous wooden tanks are probably among the most impressive attractions, as they continued to be used until a few decades ago.
At the end of your visit, treat yourself to tastings of various wines offered on the spot, or stop at the wine shop that can be found on the museum’s premises to buy wine varieties produced on the island at discounted prices. Can you think of a better present to bring back home?
