Maybe not the highest but officially the largest mountain (range) in **Croatia **– **Velebit**. Somehow amazing and so powerful-looking mountain. It feels like Velebit rises up from Adriatic Sea and heading to the sky. Its highest peak is on aprox. 1750 meters above sea level. Velebit is home for **Velebit Nature Park** and two national parks: **Pa[klenica National Park**](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/national-park-paklenica-only-for-brave-hikers-eq2w) and **Sj[everni Velebit National Park**](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/cave-exploring-northern-velebit-national-park-wamr).

Interesting information: - **Mountain Velebit** was inspiration for the first Croatian novel *Planine *(Mountains) published in 1536 and written by Petar Zoranić; - **Degenia **is the symbol of this region and **Velebit mountain**. It’s an **endemic plant** to this nature park and for its importance shows up on the coin – *lipa *(**Croatian currency** is *kuna *and coins are called *lipa*)

Velebit (pronounced [v̞ɛlɛ̌bit]; Italian: Alpi Bebie) is the largest though not the highest mountain range in Croatia. Its highest peak is the Vaganski vrh at 1,757 m.

The range forms a part of the Dinaric Alps and is located along the Adriatic coast, separating it from Lika in the interior. Velebit begins in the northwest near Senj with the Vratnik mountain pass and ends 145 km to the southeast near the source of the Zrmanja river northwest of Knin.
