The most southern part of Sweden is a county called Skåne. Visit it, and you will discover a diverse region with a distinct history. Here is why you should explore the south of Sweden.

The Oresund Bridge, which was also the scene for the TV-show the Bridge that became an international phenomenon, connects Skåne to the European continent. Some might say that people from Skåne, with their distinct dialect, are closer to Europe than the capital, Stockholm. Ma[lmö](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/a-weekend-getaway-in-malmoe-s1e2) is, for instance, known to be influenced by Berlin, with its diverse and multicultural feeling. This closeness to Europe has tailored the county.

Discover the unique landscape and history of Skåne

Even though the county is only 11,303 square kilometers big, its nature is very diverse. Traveling through the county, you will see the lush green hills and vast fields full of blooming yellow raps flowers. In the east stretches Österlen, a coastal region characterized by sandy beaches, picturesque former fishing villages and a light that attracts the same kind of artist that journey to Provence. In the west lies the nature reserve Kullaberg, with rocky shores and wild vegetation.

As three of four sides of the county border the ocean, the sea is never too far away. Skåne is not only the most southern Swedish point of landmass but also the most southern Scandinavian.

Skåne’s history differs from many other Swedish regions. This is partly because the county used to belong to Denmark. It was only from the 18th century that Skåne became Swedish. With several castles and strongholds, churches and Viking remains – Skåne is a perfect place for those interested in history.

Cities to visit

Skåne is not only scenic landscapes and stunning beaches; there is plenty to do if you prefer urban life. Travel to Malmö, which is the third-largest city in Sweden. A couple of miles to the east lays Lund, home to the famous Lund University. Lund University is internationally renowned and is rated as the best university in Sweden. The city itself is highly influenced by the university and has a vibrant student life. For instance, every fourth year, the city turns into a carnival called Lundakarnevalen, planned and arranged by the students of the university.

Those seeking a calmer and relaxing vibe should visit Båstad and Torekov in the northwest. During summer, these two towns bloom and visitors travel from all over Sweden to enjoy the tranquillity. The winter is rougher, and the cities lie quiet, which is perfect for those wanting a peaceful vacation.

No matter if you are traveling through Skåne just for a day, or staying for a more extended vacation, the county has plenty to offer. Most tourist visit during summer, when the days are long and nights short, but this charming county will leave you with memorable experiences all year long.
