Situated in North West London (but still within close proximity to central London !),  between Childs Hill to the north, Frognal[](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/willesden-to-cricklewood-one-rock-star-s-love-for-forgotten-london-3ms7) and Hampstead to the north-east, Swiss Cottage to the east, Kilburn to the south-west, and** South Hampstead, West Hampstead is a highly sought-after residential neighborhood, although not being quite as pricey as neighbouring Hampstead.

My excuse is that I used to live here. But there are far more reasons than just that. I’ve lived in many different parts of London, but few have charmed me as much as this one. With its diverse range of properties suitable for everyone, from cozy apartments and flats to spacious houses, West Hampstead offers something for every resident. I went to school nearby Cricklewood, and most of my old schoolmates were from other areas such as Kilburn and Willesden, but it’s always West Hampstead where we choose to meet for drinks each year around Christmas time.

It's the perfect blend of attractive properties, excellent schools (college, university too), well-connected roads, a vibrant community full of small shops and businesses, and its proximity to important transportation hubs (nearby tube and railways train stations) like the West Hampstead Thameslink station, making it an ideal site to live, socialize, and provides easy access to various parts of the city to enjoy the best of London.

After Camden council authorized a sizable housing development that will involve funds for transportation improvements in the neighborhood, the bustling West Hampstead tube station will now have step-free access.

In this lively neighbourhood, you'll also find professionals and enthusiasts capturing the essence and stories of West Hampstead through their lens. Photographers and storytellers flock to the area, capturing its unique charm and beauty in their photos and narratives. Their artistic perspective adds another layer of appreciation to the vibrant community. The excellent transport links allow locals and visitors easy access to other parts of the city. Trains connect the area with different destinations, providing convenient travel options for commuting or exploring.

Additionally, the neighbourhood is well-served by buses, providing convenient transportation options. Whether heading to Waterloo or exploring other parts of the city, the bus services make getting around a breeze. West Hampstead offers excellent educational opportunities through its prestigious colleges and schools for those with children. Families can find various services and resources to support their children's growth and development in the area.

At the heart of the area is West End Lane, a long and winding high street stretching from Kilburn high road to Finchley Road. Local legend states that the Beatles’ song ‘The Long and Winding Road’ was written about this street. The Beatles were often in the local area when recording at the nearby Abbey Road studios. West Hampstead boasts a rich and diverse cultural scene. As you walk along the area, you'll be captivated by the elegant architecture of the mansion blocks, showcasing the district's architectural heritage. These iconic buildings contribute to the unique character of West Hampstead, creating a captivating ambiance cherished by its residents and visitors alike. Alongside these beautiful houses, you'll also find ongoing development projects that further enhance the neighbourhood, blending old and new seamlessly.

On West End Lane, the shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars give West Hampstead its village-esque feel and communal atmosphere. The lively atmosphere of West End Lane brings the area to life. Notable buildings along this route include the Hampstead Synagogue, built in 1892 and still in use as a place of O[rthodox-Jewish](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/hervas-and-the-jewish-quarter-that-survived-uh37) worship, and Emmanuel Church, another listed building built in 1897. Hampstead Heath, with its stunning natural beauty, is a popular spot for families and individuals seeking outdoor activities. It has a vibrant cafe scene that caters to various tastes.

Some homes surrounding Hampstead Heath offer breathtaking views of the park, making it an ideal location for families looking for a serene and picturesque environment. What’s more is that the area also has its fair share of green spaces, such as West End Green by the Victorian Fire Station and Fortune Green Park, the largest green space in the area that, quite amazingly, dates back to the middle ages. The neighbourhood's charm extends beyond its musical history, with thriving property markets and a sense of community its residents cherish. Art enthusiasts can visit the local gallery locations, showcasing the works of talented artists from the area and beyond. Whether you're strolling along the West End Lane section or exploring the surrounding streets, let West Hampstead be your guide. This part of the town's vibrant and dynamic nature will captivate you.

Every time I‘m in town, it seems a new restaurant has opened up, and an old one has transformed into something new. But one, in particular, has been here for at least a couple of decades: the Banana Tree, a reasonably priced and stylish little restaurant with a delicious range of Thai and mixed Asian food on the menu.  There are, however, endless options for places to eat, and I’ve never heard of a bad restaurant in the area. But for a less fancy and more traditionally British alternative, West Hampstead is also home to one of the top Fish and Chips restaurants in the country. Nautilus is beside Fortune Green Park and has won national awards for its version of Britain’s most famous dish and services. In addition to its culinary delights, West Hampstead is known for its charming bakeries, where you can indulge in delectable treats and artisanal pastries that draw in a diverse population.

As you explore West End Lane, you'll find that the atmosphere extends to the friendly price range of the establishments. West Hampstead’s most popular bar is undoubtedly the Black Lion, first established as a beer house in 1666. I’ve been coming to this place since I was a teenager and have seen it evolve from a typical old-school pub where people would watch f[ootball](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/a-short-history-of-athletic-bilbao-379g) into a posh gastro-pub with craft beer and fine wine.

As much as I miss the atmosphere of the old days, most people prefer its new and swanky interior, which is always packed on weekends. I no longer catch sports on TV here, but the Railway Lines pub just down the lane is the place to go. It’s on the corner of Broadhurst Gardens, which is another cool spot for evening drinks. If you're in the mood for cocktails, you'll find hidden gems serving creative concoctions. You will appreciate the convenient walking distance to these establishments, making running errands or meeting up with friends easy.

For those seeking entertainment, the area offers a vibrant theatre scene. You can immerse yourself in captivating performances and artistic productions from small independent theatres to larger venues. These theatres tell stories through various genres, providing theatre enthusiasts with diverse experiences.

So, whether you're seeking a glimpse into the area's fascinating history and culture or looking for exciting events and bustling pubs, West Hampstead is a name that holds a special place in London. Its strategic proximity between the south-west and the metropolitan east serves as a link to explore various parts of the city. Being a member of this lively community means having access to an array of market experiences, adding to the charm of the neighbourhoods. So, whether you want to shop, immerse yourself in the captivating architecture, or enjoy a theatrical performance, West Hampstead welcomes you with its village-like charm, convenient amenities, and lively atmosphere. You will love West Hampstead at first sight !
