What to do in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro District

The Nørrebro district is located in the northwest Copenhagen and is the city’s most vibrant and hip neighbourhood. The area is well known for its creativity, since it's filled with student life and bars, which are open until late at night. 

As you wander through the streets of Nørrebro you will also come across the Assistens kirkegård (cemetery) and the graves of some famous Danish icons, such as Hans Christian Andersen (author) and Søren Kierkegaard (philosopher and poet). This is not your typical cemetery place, but more of a green area used by the locals as a park. Southern Nørrebro is home to the Co[penhagen lakes](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/a-weekend-in-copenhagen-7fwk), which are definitely worth exploring. The lakes are an important and popular spot for everyday life, filled with joggers, walkers and families.   

Before we dive into some of the unique and cool places in the Nørrebro district, one recommendation is to stroll on Jægersborggade. This is probably one of the main streets of Nørrebro, where the majority of cafes and restaurants are located.

What to eat in Nørrebro:

Møller kaffe & køkken (mills coffee and kitchen)** is a rather popular place for breakfast**. The concept is to order numerous dishes, as they are served in smaller portions. The dishes include rye bread with all kinds of toppings, coconut granola, burrata cheese, eggs, and waffles. What a feast! 

Believe it or not porridge is the new big thing in Nørrebro. Grød is a chain of cafes which flourished in popularity over the years and has thus four different cafes in Copenhagen, and one in Aarhus. Grød offers porridge, and specifically Grød bowls, which are like granola bowls with various toppings and grains. All of these items can be also purchased in the Grød shop, which even sells its cookbook. The main mission behind launching Grød was to present porridge in a different way and make it more of an appealing meal to have. 

As you might already know one of Denmark’s specialities are Da[nish hot dogs](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/rode-polser-the-ultimate-danish-hot-dog-and-where-to-find-it-yhg2). At Plantepølsen (plant sausages) you can get a delicious vegan hotdog, which is the very first plant based hot dog in Copenhagen. The hot dogs come with delicious toppings such as slaw, pickles, kimchi and much more.   

Where to drink in Nørrebro:

BRUS is a popular bar, brewery, restaurant and a shop, all combined into one. It has a cosy Scandinavian interior and a relaxing atmosphere. It is a good option for both food and drinks, and especially the beers and their homemade cocktails are worth trying. If you wish, you can also book a tour of the brewery, which runs every last Saturday of the month at 15h. 

Gilt is a hidden bar in Nørrebro with amazing cocktails, and a very unique and cosy feel. Note, it is a very small place and has no windows. However, don’t be dissuaded and make sure you add it on your bucket list.
