Winter Escapes in Greece; Fairytale destinations

If you ever thought that Greece is a destination only worth-visiting during summertime, well, I’m here with this series of pages to prove you definitely wrong.

As promised in part 5, I am now back to present a few alternative winter escapes in Greece that await to be discovered and that would definitely steal your heart!

Part 6. Fairytale-like escapes!

Have you ever wondered how it feels like to be traveling to destinations that look like they came straight out of a fairytale? Well, I have and to be honest visiting some of the places that are about to be described below, gave me the inspiration to write such a page.

Natural surroundings, picturesque settings, bridges, traditional architecture, impressive made out of rock houses, cobblestone paths, small rivers and blue-green lakes…Don’t they bring straight in mind idyllic fairytale destinations that we used to hear about in tales while growing up?

Feel like discovering some of those places in Greece? If yes, just keep scrolling! Here are a few places that worth a visit while traveling in Greece; hidden gems about to be revealed, so keep some notes!

1) Elati; A cosmopolitan mountain town in Thessaly

Heading up the west side of the mountain, amid a lush landscape of planes and firs, with a view of the river and the little villages across the way, you’ll soon arrive at the beautiful, picturesque village of Elati, at an altitude of 950m.** It is the primary ‘passage’ for dozens of journeys in Thessaly, whether they be asphalt expeditions, hiking trails or walking paths through the forest. It’s no coincidence that Elati is the destination of choice for alpine adventurers.**

2) Pertouli; the lush vegetation paradise

Take a trip to a heavenly green landscape embraced by southern slopes of the Pindus range. Thousands of square metres of infinite beauty: lush vegetation, natural springs, rushing rivers and seasonal lakes create a stunning sight. Pertouli, with its dense forests and high tourist standards, including a small ski resort, is one of the main attractions of northern Greece all year round.

3) Nymfaio; The cobblestone village

**Nymfaio is built in an altitude of 1.350 m and according to Unesco,it has been singled out as one of the ten most picturesque villages of Europe! **This fascinating village with stone built houses and cobblestone paths, surrounded by a breathtaking beech forest, looks like it just came out of a fairytale book. Nymfaio is a year round charming destination as it combines remarkable beauty of nature, a distinctive glorious past, unique traditional guesthouses and numerous cafes and restaurants.

4) Meteora; the suspended in the air monastery

Meteora is among the most impressive regions in Greece, with huge rocks in the middle of a valley. Located on the northern side of the country, the rocks of Meteora are actually miracles of nature. Studies suggest that these rocks were formed 60 million years ago, when weathering and earthquakes gave them their present shape. What created this rare geological phenomenon is one of the mysteries of nature and there are many theories about it, that unfortunately have never been proven. But as amazing a marvel of nature is, just as miraculous and spectacular the view is from the top!
