Continuing my “3-day itinerary”** series, I am now back with this page to suggest a new route during which you’ll have the chance to explore probably the most picturesque island that comes to mind when speaking about Greece, the idyllic Santorini!**
Santorini is actually breath-taking and as far as I know it’s a different kinda of island. Holidays in Santorini is the dream of a lifetime for many people. As it is the top tourist destination in Greece, the island is famous for its impressive caldera, the volcano and its romantic sunset. In fact, it is frequently included among the best destinations in the world. Over the last years, the touristic season has been extended in Santorini, from early April until early November due to the many cruise ships that dock there.
In the itinerary that follows, I’ve prepared a few suggestions that would definitely steal your heart and give you a few ideas to keep in mind while exploring Santorini and its surroundings!
If you’ve just arrived to the greek capital and wish to visit the unique island of Santorini, then you should definitely not worry since there are multiple ways to easily get you there! Santorini is a member of the Cyclades Islands off the coast of Greece and it can be reached either by plane or by boat. Direct flights to Santorini National Airport can be booked during peak travel season, which is late April through early October. (If you’re flying from Greece, keep in mind that this is the only time of year that airlines other than Olympic Airways or Aegean Airlines fly into Santorini). If you prefer traveling by boat, then all you have to to is to just go to the port of Pireaus, where you can instantly buy your ticket for one of the three different ferries leaving daily for Santorini!
Upon your arrival you’ll sooner or later realise that Santorini is just magic! Hundreds of white-washed buildings, gathered together on a striking volcanic cliff. The rich, blue Mediterranean ocean perfectly complements the signature blue domes of the many churches scattered around the island. This island truly is a sight to behold! Ride donkeys, climb its active volcano, go quad biking on crazy roads, enjoy the black sand beaches and dive into crystal clear waters! *What’s not to love about this place?*
The Fira-Oia Hike is probably the highlight of visiting Santorini and it’s an experience not to be missed! It takes you along the caldera cliff and through the villages of Fira, Imerovigli, and of course Oia! The hike takes around 2hours and a half, and I recommend doing the hike at sunset, as it won’t be as hot at this time of day and if you’re into photography, you’ll definitely get the most beautiful photos at this time of day!
Tip. Buy water the day before starting your route, since it’s probably gonna be difficult to find open stores on your way, especially if you start your trip early in the morning!
To end this incredible 3-day itinerary to Santorini and its surroundings, a visit to Thirasia is definitely recommended! There is a little boat that goes from Oia to Thirassia every day and it’s for sure the best choice you’ll ever make! Unlike other touristic villages such as Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira on Santorini, Thirasia is an overlooked village on the second largest island of the volcanic Santorini island group. I would not say Thirasia is completely off the beaten track because tourists come there every day. Still, the island is lesser known than the villages on the main Santorini island.
