Being Greek, I’ve many times found myself in conversations where I’ve been constantly asked by international people to provide them with info about the “hidden” and not touristic islands that are worth-visiting while in Greece. The options of where to go in Greece are seemingly endless, and they all look great. Whatever you’re after, a holiday in Greece has something for everyone, it’s just a question of knowing where to look!

To get to the point and save you some time from crawling into the web for info, I’ve decided to start this series of pages, "your secret greek island" during which I’ll be presenting you each week an awesome greek island, out of the beaten track! I’ll do my best to provide you with the most local suggestions about each one of them; promise! Whether you’re looking for a romantic holiday with your significant other and your family, or a party vacation with your group of friends, stay tuned, cause I’m pretty sure that in this series you’ll find what you’re seeking for!

Thassos; time for some quality holiday

Many people consider** Thassos** to be the jewel of the Aegean sea. Located in the Northern Greece, Thassos, along with Samothraki, is in fact the most Northern greek island on the map. It’s 8 nautical miles from the port of Keramoti and it can be reached by ferry from the beautiful city of Kavala. Thassos is popular as one of the greenest islands in Greece and will no doubt steal your heart upon the first visit!

The island is ideal for family holiday, since it can be reached quite easily and it has loads of gorgeous sandy beaches offered for kids of all ages. In fact, Thassos has some very impressive beaches, with the best in the south and east and many delightful coves found off the beaten track. Ideal for trekking and hiking activities too, Thassos offers a variety of mountainous villages that definitely worth a visit. The mountainous villages in the inland are famous for their distinct traditional architecture, with stone houses, paved streets and grey-tiled roofs and of course for their local delicacies.

Thassos’ lagoon

Also known as Giola, Thassos Lagoon can be found near the village of Astris. It is said to be one of the most impressive natural pools in Greece since a rocky wall separates it from the aegean sea, which rinses its shores and fills it with water. The water is actually quite warm and therefore a unique diving or swimming experience is guaranteed!

The golden beach

It’s probably the best beach you can acquaint with while in Thassos. It’s only located 12kilometers away from Limenas, and it’s considered to be one of the “sandiest” beaches of Thassos. It’s also known as “golden sand” or in Greek “Chrisi ammoudia”. It is a well organized beach and its shallow waters are ideal for children.
