Znojmo is a famous winemaking town in the region of South Moravia, located around 200 kilometers south from Prague, close to the Austrian border. Znojmo is a town, which is known for its rich production of delicious wine and other local agricultural products. As the** harvest season** is right around the corner, book a visit to one of the winery tours, which include wine tasting and a visit to some of the most picturesque **Moravian wine routes. **
What is fascinating about Znojmo is the construction of the town, which is surrounded by a wall. The **city walls **date back to the Middle Ages, more specifically the 13th century, and were used to guard the city. Note that the location of the city was the main southern entrance to the land of Bohemia. The city-fortress is not only made of a wall-like construction but also round towers which helped to protect the city from intruders. The wall structure contains several wall belts. The oldest belt of the wall is the highest and still very well preserved.
One of the other important sights and must-sees in this charming Moravian town is the Rotunda of St. Catherine. The famous Znojmo Rotunda, is a Romanesque rotunda and dates back to the 11th century. Inside the building is some of the most valuable art: fresco-secco. It is a specific type of wall art that is painted but is not very durable, so it is more prone to degrade. For **Czechia **and the locals, the Znojmo Rotunda is one of the most important monuments of this city.
If you have a chance, try to plan a visit to the Znojmo Catacombs, which is an underground labyrinth. The undergrounds of Znojmo extend to around 27 kilometers in length and are made out of four levels making this underground labyrinth one of the largest in Central Europe. You can choose to book a guided tour or explore it by yourself. Either way, you will come across some very unique sights, such as an alchemist workshop, and prison cells which were used during the medieval times and now serve as wine cellars. This is a rather unique and exciting sight, which you should definitely not miss.
