Located in West Asia on the Armenian Highlands, it is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran to the south. The terrain is mostly mountainous, with fast flowing rivers, and few forests. The land rises to 4,090 metres above sea level at Mount Aragats. The climate in Armenia is markedly highland continental. Summers are dry and sunny, lasting from June to mid-September. Evening breezes blowing down the mountains provide a welcome refreshing and cooling effect. Springs are short, while autumns are long. Autumns are known for their vibrant and colourful foliage. Winters are quite cold with plenty of snow. Winter sports enthusiasts enjoy skiing down the hills of Tsakhkadzor, located thirty minutes outside Yerevan.

Sightseeing 

The capital of the province is Yeghegnadzor. If you are into history, you should probably stop by the various ancient landmarks of the region, such as the Areni-1 cave complex and Areni-1 winery of the Chalcolithic period, the 8th-century Tanahat Monastery, the 10th-century Smbataberd fortress or the 13th-century Noravank monastery. Jermuk is also a main touristic attraction with many sanatoriums, spa resorts and its ropeway.

Vayots Dzor

The capital of the province is Ijevan. Main reasons for visiting the region are its cultural heritage and natural monuments. Dilijan is one of the most touristic destinations. It is known for its sanatoriums and mineral water. If you like old villages, make a stop in Achajur, Gosh, Teghut or Yenokavan village. Dilijan National Park, the Akhnabad Taxus Grove Sanctuary, the Arjatkhelni Hazel Sanctuary, the Gandzakar Sanctuary, the Ijevan Sanctuary and the Zikatar Sanctuary are listed among protected areas. If you like ecotourism, do not hesitate to stop by the Gosh Lake, the Parz Lake or the Ijevan Dendropark.

Tavush

With Vanadzor as capital and largest city, the region borders Georgia to the north. If you like history and culture, spot one of the UNESCO-listed sites: Haghpat and Sanahin monastery. If you prefer wandering in the nature, stop around Vanadzor, Stepanavan, Alaverdi, Dsegh or the river of Dzoraget and Debed. The mild summer climate and green forests attract a lot of people. The province also counts 3 natural protected areas: the Gyulagarak Sanctuary, the Margahovit Sanctuary and the Rhododendron caucasicum Sanctuary. The Vanadzor Botanical Garden is also a major destination that should not be missed.

Lori

Yerevan is the capital of the province and Armenia, as well as one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Yerevan is also considered as one of the safest cities in the world. If you decide to stop by, you will visit a lot of landmarks such as the Erebuni Fortress, the Katoghike Tsiranavor, Saint Gregory Cathedral, Tsitsernakaberd, opera houses, theatres, museums, libraries and cultural institutions. Do not forget to enjoy a good drink when the sun goes down. Yerevan has an extensive nightlife scene with a broad variety of nightclubs, cafés, casinos, restaurants.

Yerevan

It borders Turkey to the south and west. Vagharshapat is the largest city of the region, where you will find many museums while discovering the place. The province is the spiritual centre of the Armenian nation. If you have a taste for history, old monuments and World Heritage sites, we recommend you to stop in the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, Zvartnots Cathedral, Saint Hripsime Church, Saint Gayane Churchland or Shoghakat Church.  Armavir is also one of the richest cultural places of the Republic of Armenia.

Armavir

It borders Turkey to the west, and Georgia to the north. It’s capital and largest city is Gyumri. The province is mainly dominated by the Ashotsk Plateau at the north and the Shirak Plain at the centre and the south. The Bazum and Pambak mountains surround the vast plains from the east. Besides all of this nature interest, many tourists visit the region for the cultural heritage: fortresses, archaeological sites, churches, monasteries… Do not miss the 7th century Harichavank Monastery, a must-see destination.

Shirak

Its capital is Hrazdan, and the largest city is Abovyan. History plays an important role in the region, that counts many ancient landmarks and tourist attractions, such as the 1st-century Temple of Garni, the medieval Bjni Fortress, 11th-century Kecharis Monastery and the 13th-century monastery of Geghard. The region is also known for its popular winter sports resorts, the spa-town of Tsaghkadzor and the mountain resort of Aghveran.

Kotayk

The largest province of Armenia, it borders Azerbaijan to the east. The area is covered by the Lake Sevan, the largest lake in Transcaucasia and the most touristic attraction of the province. Tourists visit the region for its cultural heritage and the natural monuments. Many forests of the province are listed among the protected areas of Armenia, like the Sevan National Park, the Getik Sanctuary and the Juniper Woodlands Sanctuary. If you are fond of ecotourism, visit the Sevan Botanical Garden too.

Gegharkunik

Its capital and largest city is Kapan. Majority of tourists come to the region during the summer. Most of them look for its cultural heritage and its natural beauty. In 2010, the region built the longest reversible aerial tramway between Halizdor and Tatev monastery. If you have a taste for nature, you should check one of the many forests in the region such as the Arevik National Park, Shikahogh State Reserve or one of the wildlife sanctuaries.

Syunik

It borders Turkey to the west. The province is named after the biblical Mount Ararat. The touristic spot of this province is the Khor Virap monastery. It’s an attractive site for all archaeologists. The province is home to many protected areas, including the Khosrov Forest State Reserve, the Goravan Sands Sanctuary and the Khor Virap Wildlife Sanctuary.
