If you haven’t noticed, spring is finally here! And I don’t know about you, but I am constantly thinking about some small, getaway trips, getting in touch with the nature, that we seem to forget about during tedious winter, and enjoying in the fresh air. Inspired by the last road trip I had in Serbia, I decided to selflessly share with you one of the most amazing places. If you are not that high level mountaineer to hike the Balkans, but if you want to see more of glorious northern part of Serbia, Vojvodina, then I have the perfect spot for you. On this unforgettable day trip, I am taking you to the Fruska Gora Mountain.
The scientists call Fruska Gora “the mirror of geographical past”, while among the people it is indeed a mirror of cultural past and rich history, dating back to centuries ago, due to the uncountable number of monasteries, about which I will write in the inspirations to come. Due to its culturally rich monuments, Fruska gora is also called Holy Mountain or Serbian Atos. What you surely didn’t know is that Fruska Gora was an island in the Panonian sea, but millions of years ago. Today it is a mystical, beautiful mountain and protected national park, also famous for producing some of the Serbia's best wine.
Do you still wonder if this is a perfect place to go to? What makes this mountain so extraordinary are its rich vineyards, as pathways of Fruska gora are also wine trails. Therefore, wine tasting is a rather popular leisure activity. And if you are coming for longer than a day, you should definitely take a tour of all the wineries, of which the best ones are located in the baroque city of Sremski Karlovci, situated at the Danube river. If you happen to be there late September, you simply must join the Karlovac’s wine festival and honor the best wine in the region.
Going to Fruska Gora is just so easy, especially if you have a car. Located only a few kilometers from Novi Sad, it is a perfect choice for a getaway adventure. We just hopped in the car, with Serbian pita in our bags, and a few bananas, all of which ended up completely smashed. After all, all we needed was a positive spirit, willingness to shamelessly practice Russian Kazachok and French Can-Can on the trails and plenty of adventurous spirit.
However, going by car was also an adventure, as for the first time I had an opportunity to see skela- popular transportation method over the Danube river that connects Futog and Fruska Gora. Similar to traditional ferry, this is a great shortcut and a unique chance to get out of your car, enjoy the wonderful breeze, river sights and get familiar with all the small islands nearby. In case you get lost during your road trip though, have no fear, as you can just stop one of the locals who will kindly show you the route. Once you get to Fruska Gora, I warmly suggest you to simply walk and enjoy the nature. Let your imagination take you to some unknown routes, which is what made this trip for me memorable.
