The Amsterdam Dance Event **(ADE)** is the leading electronic music platform and the biggest club festival in the world for the whole spectrum of electronic sub-genres. Genial, right?

Since the ADE has just closed its doors the last weekend, I decided that it was the perfect timing to have it featured on our page!

## So let me tell you a few things about it!



The Amsterdam Dance Event is organised every year **at the end of October** and it attracts millions & millions of attendants from all around the globe. A few years ago and while living in the Netherlands, I had the chance to attend this magnificent and super well-organised event; **th*e whole city of Amsterdam transforms literally into a huge music venue; ***the week-long showcase explores the depths of the genre through a series of club nights, discussions and conferences in venues and spaces across the city.

ADE's multiple conference tracks offer the ultimate annual business and inspiration platform in the field of electronic music, featuring dedicated programming for business professionals, start-ups, aspiring producers and musicians, students, VJs, visual artists and stage designers. At the same time, multiple venues welcome some of the most renown worldwide Dj’s and the party doesn’t stop until the early morning hours.

**Even if you’re not a fan of the electronic music, the ADE weekend is a perfect time to visit the Dutch capital;** the city is buzzing with tourists while events and concerts are being held outdoors almost in every neighbourhood. It’s a great time to explore and dance yourself off till the sun comes up! The event covers multiple tastes and guarantees you the time of your life; the mostly free daytime program features a wealth of dance music-related exhibitions, films, documentaries, DJ showcases, gear master classes and artist MusicTalks, taking place across Amsterdam's five main districts, utilising historical locations and unique venues across the city.

- The Oud-Zuid district in Amsterdam is home to the most prestigious neighborhoods in the city. They’ve got the high end shopping street of P.C. Hooftstraat and Baerlestraat, top tier restaurants, and a cozy local park for people to sit and hangout with friends. Definitely worth a look!
- Museum galore: If it’s museums you’re looking for, this is THE place! In the Museumplein is the **Rijksmuseum**, **Van Gogh Museum**, and the **Moco Museum**. There’s also the famous concert hall Concertgebouw, which has been considered one of the best in the world!
- Event hub: Even besides the museums, you can always find something to do in the museum square. They often have weekend markets, outdoor concerts, and local demonstrations. **Winter wonderland:** During the winter months, the entire square becomes a holiday festival with Amsterdam’s Christmas market! The pond is even transformed into an ice skating rink, so you can twirl your way around the infamous museum square.

The Royal Palace in Amsterdam is one of three palaces in the Netherlands which are at the disposal of the monarch by Act of Parliament.

The palace was built as a city hall during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. The building became the royal palace of King Louis Napoleon and later of the Dutch Royal House. It is situated on the west side of Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam, opposite the War Memorial and next to the Nieuwe Kerk.

Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam

The Leidseplein is a square in central Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Lying in the southwest of the Grachtengordel district of Amsterdam, the Leidseplein is immediately northeast of the Singelgracht canal. It is situated on the crossroads of the Weteringschans, the Marnixstraat, and the Leidsestraat.

The Leidseplein is one of the busiest centres for nightlife in the city. Historically, the square was the end of the road from Leiden, and served as a parking lot for horse-drawn traffic. Today, modern traffic travels through the square and side streets are packed with restaurants and nightclubs. The Stadsschouwburg, a theater, is the most notable architectural landmark on the square, and the American Hotel is close by.

- The park was named after the Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel, whose statue is placed within the park grounds. It is known for its English-style landscape with woods and lakes throughout to showcase it as an ideal natural landscape. Dutch residents and tourists alike come here to appreciate the outdoors by jogging, cycling, dog-walking, roller-blading, or just lounging in the grass.
- During the summer months, one of Vondelpark’s most sought out locations is its open air music stage “Vondelpark Openlucht” where you can delight in a range of performances for dance, theater, comedy and music! Make sure to check out the lineup to see who is performing during your visit.
- Considering the park is located in the heart of Amsterdam, it is easy to combine with multiple activities. Nearby is Holland’s most popular museum highlighting Dutch history and art: the Rijksmusem.

Vondelpark 

Studio 80 lies hidden behind its distinctive black doors. A small, intimate and dark underground nightclub with a capacity of 500, divided over 2 rooms equipped with a custom-built soundsystem. Studio 80 came to life in a former national radio studio (established in 2005) as a platform for new electronic music, a place where young DJs, musicians, radio broadcasters, designers and promoters could find a home to develop their talent. These values are still reflected in today's forward thinking programming.

With its international style and allure, this club has become a favorite among locals and celebrities alike. While Jimmy Woo is undoubtedly a hotspot for party-goers, it's important to note that not everyone gets in. The club has a strict door policy, and it's not entirely clear what the criteria are. We deliberately picked the Tolhuistuin for our club night, Progress Bar, which focuses on a more socially and politically aware take on club culture. We mix talks, screenings, performance and clubbing into one night. Just a short ferry ride across the IJ from Central Station, Amsterdam Noord prides itself on an edgier and raw atmosphere – that still persists amid the gentrification. Tolhuistuin is a good example of this. It’s in the canteen of the old Shell factory, an industrial remnant that has been repurposed as a cultural destination offering a mix of music, theatre and exhibitions, bringing together mainstream and more avant garde, free-spirited programming.

Located in the bustling heart of Amsterdam, the Melkweg (Milky Way) is one of the city's leading entertainment venues with two halls, a cinema, a theatre and a cafe - and a varied live programme. The Melkweg boasts three outstanding halls to support their varied live music programme. The intimate Oude Zaal plays host to up-and-coming bands while The Max regularly welcomes established names. The latest addition is the Rabozaal: a modern, multifunctional hall connected to the Stadsschouwburg and ideal for seated concerts.

De Marktkantine has been around for about two years. For me, it’s the most unappreciated club in the city even though the programming is high-quality, and varied. There are other clubs in Amsterdam that are trying hard to trademark a certain style but Marktkantine is more relaxed about who can come in. You can still see the balconies and booths from when it was a theatre. The balcony is particularly large and gives a great view down onto the stage. Then, behind the stage there are stairs up to another level with a small bar. They just started a new series of nights, curated by DJ and producer duo Red Axes, with shows every couple of months. The first edition was a success and musically it was amazing.

De Marktkantine

- School is in session! De School opened its **large overhead roller doors** in 2016, converting an old car manufacturing building into a trendy, upscale restaurant. You get candlelights and exhaust pipes, an interesting combo! **Surprise, surprise.** The restaurant uses a fixed menu but you’re always in for a surprise! Unlike most places, De School gives you a choice of a 3, 5, or 7 course meal. Best to go with an empty stomach! 
- Want to choose your own food? Head to De School’s cafe. Plenty of small bites and coffee options to fill up on. Hang inside or out on their terrace! Make sure to check out De School’s shop, where you can take home their personal beer, vodka, or merch!
- Food for fuel: Looking to pump some iron before or after your meal? De School has a gym on-site for all you gym rats out there. 

Fine dining with an industrial twist: get your grub on with a surprise fixed menu in an old mechanics warehouse.

Trouw is without a doubt one of Amsterdam’s best club spaces, if not one of the most highly-regarded venues in the world. Ask anyone their top 10 clubs on the planet and you’re likely to find that Trouw will be in the list somewhere (usually nearer the top). The building is a former newspaper printing press, converted to accommodate the very best in house, techno and disco, along with live acts, an art space and a sublime restaurant. The bad news is that it’s only a temporary space and will cease to exist at the beginning of 2015. So make sure you get there as soon as you can, it is immense.
