There are few places around Podgorica, close to the city center, where you can get a feeling of being outside of the city and enjoy beautiful views and nature around you. One of these places, maybe the most significant one is the Gorica Hill – a natural oasis in the heart of Podgorica. About its significance speaks also a fact that the city got its name after the hill – Podgorica means ‘’below Gorica’’.
The Gorica Hill is a favorite recreational site for the locals, a great getaway from the summer heat, a place where you can walk under the three-shadow and enjoy in fresh air – so no wonder why Gorica is known as Podgorica’s lungs. During the day as well as during the evening, there are always many people around the Gorica Hill. Long walking and cycling paths, training equipment, a football field, an adventure park – all of this enables people to have some active time here, and that’s why we are loving it so much!
Recently, an adventure park was opened close to the cafe where you can sit and enjoy your drink while listening to the birds singing and being surrounded by the forest. In the Adventure park, fun can have young and old - jumping, climbing and walking among the tall trees.
Close to the adventure park, there is a Partisan Monument that was officially presented on July 13, 1957, on the Day of the Uprising of the People of Montenegro. The Monument is a memorial complex where 97 heroes were buried. During the period of socialist Montenegro, the memorial complex was the central place for marking the national holidays and anniversaries at that time. In addition to the mausoleum, the young recruits of the Yugoslav People's Army were taking a military oath, and new Tito pioneers were handed the red scarves. The Mausoleum was a symbol of the capital back then and was located on the coat of arms of the city.
Even today, during the most important Montenegrin state holidays, the state and city, as well as the veterans and political delegations, they lay the wreaths in honor of the fallen fighters.
At the foot of the Gorica Hill, in front of the main entrance, there is a little church - St George Church, that is considered to be one of the oldest monuments in the city. It was built between the 9th and the 11th century. The church is small and mystic, peaceful and with a beautiful garden. It is the oldest active Christian oratory in Montenegro.
Just opposite of the St. George’s Church, there is a popular cafe Boćari with a boccia lane after which it got its name. It is an idyllic place where you can sit under the shadow of the dense leaves and have a black coffee during the day or draft beer in the evening. It is a place that sometimes hosts local bands, but even without the live stage, there is always some chill music going on.
When visiting Podgorica, the Gorica hill is a must see as it is a true natural oasis in our capital. Everyone will for sure enjoy walking around and having a coffee or beer in one of the nearby cafes.
