Montenegro may be small in terms of area, it boast stunning mountainous landscapes, dramatic coastlines, historic monuments and truly beautiful walled towns. The Montenegro coast is just as gorgeous as that of its better known neighbour, Croatia, and it is for good reason that its main tourist destinations can get crowded in summer. Nevertheless, if you can't visit at another time, don't let their popularity hold you back. Even the largest of cruise ship crowds will not stop you from enjoying this country's magnificent Riviera and Medieval coast towns, especially if you're willing to get up early and do your sightseeing ahead of the others.

Rio Grande do Sul

Kotor is developed around Stari Grad, the city's old town and its best known landmark, which is listed within the UNESCO World heritage sites. Kotor Bay is the deepest natural fjord-like bay in the Mediterranean Sea. It is well-known for its World heritage medieval structures, including churches and fortifications and its stunning natural setting at the very edge of the mountain-rimmed Kotor Bay. But there are also other things to see and do out of the bay, like the Tara river or the San Giovanni Fort.

The city doesn’t have a lot to offer, besides its beautiful nature. In the Durmitor National Park you will see the Eyes of the mountain, a lake lost in the mountain that freezes in the winter. If you are in the region during summer, you can go walking or try rafting in the region. The mount Bobotov Kuk is a great place to hike and to enjoy the best views in the country. During the winter, the whole area becomes the biggest ski resort of the country.

Cetinje is the old royal capital of the country, when the city was, for a long time, besieged by the Ottomans. Thus the city has several monuments, churches and museums to discover. One of the most impressive monuments is the Blue Palace of the president of Montenegro. In the the south of the region, there is the National park of Lovcen, with the famous mount Lovcen. On the top of the mount there is the Mausoleum of Njegos, a place from where you can admire an impressive landscape.

With such a long access to the Adriatic sea, it is the most touristic region of the country. Budva has a lot of white sand beaches to chill and enjoy, but also an impressive old town with monuments which is particularly nice, mainly at night. Another beautiful city around is Bečići, with a 2km long sandy beach, home to numerous resorts and hotels. Budva is the most popular resort, featuring great beaches and vibrant nightlife. Petrovac is a small family-friendly town with great beaches, and finally Sveti Stefan village, a cute fishing village.

Kolasin is one of the centers of Montenegro's mountain tourism. Located at the foot of Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains, the place offers great conditions for skiing, or for some long treks, depending on the season when you plan your visit. The region is also crossed by the Moraca river, where you can do plenty of activities. At the north of the region, you will find the Biogradska Gora national park, a great place all year long, known for its nature and landscape.

The capital is a nice city that has changed through the years. Podgorica is a mixture of architectural styles that reflects the turbulent history of the city. Thus it’s home to many monuments from different ages. Enjoy the city, day and night. In the south of the country, you will see the lake Shkodra with it’s national park, a great place for some nice little treks.

The city of Savnik is located on the river of the same name, the Savnik river. The region has some landscapes to explore along with forests, caves and a canyon. But the most impressive landscape is near Savnik. You will just have to follow the river and you will arrive at the Piva lake, one of the most beautiful places of the country.

The city of Plav takes its name after the neighboring lake. Generally, the activities there are limited to hiking on the mountains in the East, or visiting its parks. The national park of Prokletije is really close to the city, and extends after the borders with Albania. In the mountains, there are also two noticeable lakes, the Hrid and Visitor, two lakes with a floating island on the surface. If you are brave enough, you can try to get to the top of Maja Jezerce, in Albania.

Not very famous for tourists at first sight, it is an area where you can visit the canyon of Tara river and the ǈubišǌa mountain, two beautiful nature gems that the country offers. It is a great place for hiking and doing outdoor activities, at any time of the year, from rafting to skiing. The region also has many diverse religious monuments, constructions from the folks that have lived there throughout the ages.

The region is mostly known for its lake that crosses the whole region and gave its name to the Pluzine city, the lake of Piva. Bordering some hills, this lake is something unique for the country landscape, with deep blue waters. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the country, especially for those who enjoy trekking. Treks here can prove to be really challenging as performance, but the beauties of the landscape will pay you back.

Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is a coastal town in Montenegro, located at the foot of Mount Orjen. The Herceg Novi’s old town is one of the most remarkable places in the entire country. It is on a fairly steep hill that goes all the way down to the sea. The Kanli Kula fortress dominating the old town doubles as an open-air theatre and offers a splendid view of the town and the Kotor bay. One of the most known monasteries of the region is a few kilometers far from Herceg Novi, and it is called Savina monastery. You can also very easily go around the bay or the mountain for some nice treks, without forgetting the Tara canyon or the Tara river for some rafting or biking.

The region is mostly mountainous, and crossed by the Lim river. The region offers rafting opportunities and trekking paths, so that you can explore the mountains and enjoy the landscape around. Tifran Canyon is a great place to get in touch with nature. During the winter, many small ski resorts open for the season. In the west of the region, the National park of Biogradska Gora is a must-see.

Tivat

Already a popular tourist resort, Tivat is set to become a nautical tourism centre for the southern Adriatic. The inlets near Prevlaka, as well as the localities of Župa and Kalimanj, provide great conditions for the construction of marinas and yachting clubs. The island of Flowers is located near the town of Tivat, in the Bay of Kotor. The island includes a monastery dedicated to Archangel Michael, built in the early 13th century by Saint Sava, the medieval seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro. The region also has many nice beaches and a little path to enjoy the sea, or just to chill and get tanned.

The region is mostly known because its surrounded by the massives mountains of Komovi, Bjelasica and Prokletije. Those mountains offer several activities for tourists like hiking, biking, fishing or even rafting. The city of Andrijevica is located on the Lim river and it's the perfect spot to sleep before your treks. The city is also very quiet, with its small street orthodox church and fortress on the Lim River.

Danilovgrad

The town of Danilovgrad is located in the fertile valley of the Zeta River, sometimes called also the Bjelopavlići plain, after the name of the local clan. The most known monument in the region is the Ostrog Monastery. It’s a miracle built by nature and human interactions, carved in a vertical mountain cliff. It is today the pearl of Montenegrin spiritualism that is annually visited by more than hundred thousand pilgrims from around the world. It is one of three most visited Christian destinations on the planet, with its cave-like chapel and monastery complex that preserves the sanctity of Saint Basil, the Orthodox Christian Saint of Miracles.

There is an old castle overlooking the sea. Stari grad (old town) is worth a visit, not only for its really nice cultural heritage. After you get to the old town, walk along the wall facing the ocean and look through all the small holes in the wall that face out to the ocean. Also, stand in the archways and look how the ocean crashes against the rocks below. There are many nice beaches in the area, including some rocky ones in the southern part of town. The longest sandy beach in Montenegro, Velika Plaza, is located near by, so enjoy the white sand to chill and get tanned.

Partially cleared forests were transformed into vineyards and orchards. Wine from Župa and the royal cellars in Oplenac are droplets of history distilled into tradition. The villages of central Serbia nurture the tradition of good health, typical of this region. Central Serbia is often thought of as one big fruit and vegetable garden with a big product production annually. Chose among fishing, hunting, skiing, swimming or horse-riding, as they are the main activities you should try in this region.

A popular spot for city dwellers and rafters, the water of the Trebižat River drops some 30 meters in a beautiful natural setting of tuff walls. Top picks for village life can be found in the historic citadel of Počitelj, Blagaj or, for environmentalists, in the Zelenkovac ecovillage near Mrkonjić Grad. Just outside of Radimlja is the largest collection of Stećak, a remarkable kind of pre-Ottoman tombstones that are found throughout the ancient Bosnian Kingdom.

The region is so in the middle of all the european culture, so you will find churches, mosques and synagogues. The region also has many castles and old forteresses that are waiting to be explored. If you want to see the nature you have to go to Fruska Gora a huge natural park at the south of Novi Sad. Also it possesses a dozen of monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Combining the European Baroque with the Byzantine traditions of the Balkans, these churches have a cultural importance as a bridge between the Southern and the Northern Serbs.

This city merges several cultures, thus you will find churches, cathedrals and mosques in the same environment. Home of some precious bridges, Miljacka River crosses through Sarajevo. One of the nicest cities of the region is Mostar, a really old city of Bosnia, located in the south of the capital. The most famous bridge of the country, Stari Most bridge, is in this city. It is part of the UNESCO programme. Close to Mostar the small city of Pocitelj has a lot to offer. Even older than Mostar the city has lots of historical sites. Old houses, mosques and forterres are waiting for you. But the Sahat Kula, the tower of the city offers the best view of the horizon. If you are more into nature the region also offers ideal places to cover your needs. You can go skiing on the mountains of Bjelašnica and Igman, which are the best locations in the country. For hiking it is recommended to locate in the west of the region.
