Quite isolated, especially in the Western part, this area of Spain has been able to preserve a strong identity, also reflected in its own dialects and even language, like Galician. This remote zone has had no choice but to turn to the ocean early on, and the influence of the sea is reflected in its economy, whose one of focus is fishing. Local cuisines are rich and generous. The countryside of mountains and lakes, and its lookouts over the Atlantic Ocean are simply sublime. The coast is varied, with alternating beaches and inlets and with the occasional mountain dropping sheer into the ocean.
