Santa Catarina is a state located in the southern region of Brazil, known for its beautiful landscape. Its capital is the city of Florianópolis, since the majority of the area is located at Santa Catarina Island, it is surrounded by amazing beaches. In this article, I'll talk about Joaquina Beach, the most famous one in the region. Not too far from the city center, around 17km, Joaquina's fame is due to the big waves - which is the reason it hosts surf championships - and the dunes.

The legend about the origin of the name "Praia da Joaquina" (or Joaquina Beach) was inspired by the life of a lacemaker in the early 18th century who taught crafts to other women and prepared food for local fishermen. The history ends up tragically when one day, she gets swallowed by the strong waves of the sea. Nowadays, the residents gave it the nickname of "Joaca."

The Beach

First, Joaquina is not a big beach; it is only about 3 km long, which is approximately 30 minutes' walk. The width of the beach also changes, but it does not exceed 70 meters, and at some points, it's only about 8 to 10 meters wide. Despite the big waves, you can also find a calmer sea there, at the left corner, there is a beautiful spot to bring your family. Plus, it has become a tradition to go to Joaquina, early in the morning, and witness the always magical sunrise

Walking along the beach, you can find various spots of athletes playing soccer, beach volleyball, or surfing. The last one, by the way, is the most important. This is because Joaquina became the favorite beach for surfers and other water sports in Brazil. The beach section hosted the world surfing championship several times. Due to these events, the place became a mecca for surfing, bringing it international renown. Everything there is made to spread the special energy and flair that surfing embodies. From decoration - you can see boards all over the place - to facilities like public transportation specifically for surfers with the board.

The beach also provides excellent infrastructure, like lighting during the night, parking, lifeguard station, police station, hotels, craft shops, bars, restaurants, public showers, and restrooms.

On the road between the Lagoon of Conceição and the beach, you can see the big dune, that makes the view even wilder. There you can find places to rent a small board to go sandboarding. Tourists typically enjoy this sport for one hour - I would definitely recommend this experience. But keep in mind that once you go down, you have to climb all the way back up, holding the board - it could be a bit hard if you are not used to exercising.

If you like beaches, as much as I do, I am sure this is going to be an unique experience. Enjoy!!!
